Bad news Joker fans – Todd Phillips, the director of Joker and Joker 2, appears to be done bringing the crown prince of crime to the screen. Phillips mentioned this in a recent interview following the release of Joker 2, aka Joker: Folie a Deux.

The film received mixed-to-positive reviews when released at the Venice Film Festival, however this week’s early screenings have seen catastrophic reviews from viewers. This has culminated in a plummeting Rotten Tomatoes score, which at the time of writing has fallen as low as 39 percent.

Johnny Oleksinki of The New York Post said in their one-out-of-four-rated review: “For nearly two and a half hours, director Todd Phillips’ pathologically unnecessary movie cycles through so many potential reasons to exist... it ultimately never finds a satisfying one.”

Though it’s unclear how much was pre-planned and how much was in response to this reaction, Phillips is calling it quits. He told The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about the possibility of a stand-alone film about Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn introduced in the sequel: “It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.”

I find it funny that people are finding it hard to see why the film exists when the same can be said about stuff like the 10th fast and furious film, or the 10th saw film.. like most film franchises are milked to death for no reason but don't get this level of negative press?

Well, people do meme A LOT about the Fast & Furious franchise. Those movies are universally considered to be awful, all of them. 

The difference is: nobody goes to the theatre expecting for a Fast & Furious movie to be good. But Joker 2 had really high expectations surrounding it.

That's because Todd has, accidentally or otherwise, presented himself as a cinematic genius. Fast & Furious films aren't screened at Venice to compete for a Golden Lion lol. Most franchises realize they're trash and act accordingly. The whole insanity of the "Joker franchise" is that audiences called the first movie a super deep, psychologically relevant artistic tour de force even though critics rightfully called it out as a completely failed effort. The audience has finally caught up with what critics were seeing all along, I guess: there is nothing interesting, fun or laudable about Todd's vision.

Hope this won't affect Gaga's acting opportunities moving forward - I don't think it will, I feel like nowadays Gaga is seen as an otherworldly savant existing on a plane that's slightly detached from ours
