2024 VP Debate - Walz vs. Vance

REALITY

The thing with Vance is that purely from a rhetorical standpoint, he's actually not bad—dare I say kind of good. If you just listen to how he delivers his messages, he sounds cool, calm, and confident. The problem is that if you listen to his messages for more than two seconds, you'd understand that it's not real substance. It's word vomiting and reiterating ridiculous talking points that have no basis in reality or facts.

I think Walz struggled to find his footing in the beginning, but eventually found it and did a good job answering the questions. When it comes to actual substance, Walz cleared Vance; I especially liked his answers during the abortion portion.

Ultimately I don't think this debate will change anything, but do vice presidential debates ever do?

The more important thing is, people fell in love with Walz and that momentum he created with his rally performances and his humanity, I would say that can hardly be diminished by a one-time unexpected debate performance. It wasn't even bad, just normal imo, which would fit to him as he's running as 'the normal guy'.

My sister put it best tonight when she said the difference between the two is Walz will mess up his words but you can confidently say "it's ok, I know what he means". Vance can deliver his message perfectly and you'll say "wow, what an asshole".

Vance lied about literally everything. His record, Trump’s record, their platform. He’s selling a complete fabrication. At least Walz felt in lockstep with Harris. Trump and Vance don’t even feel like they’re on the same ticket

we got a fly and then we got “Mr vice president I’m speaking” so at least sometimes there is comedy.

Because Vance is auditioning to be the next Republican nominee. He will be young, educated, and sounds overall normal like he did tonight.

I was waiting for Walz to come up with a funny quip or something because that's what he's known for (especially after he coined the whole "weird" thing for Dems), but that never happened :selena:

I feel like what Dems are generally underestimating is the power of their candidates when they just let go, not carry too much about script and be themselves. It's those moments where they build up a connection and elevated the campaign to a broader movement. That is where the excitement comes from. Normal people having normal mannerisms. I feel like Walz was too afraid to have any hiccups and by focussing too much and then he lost the grip to actively attack Vance. But I'm not sure if that was the intent in the first place. But he still came across as just a more timid version of what Tim Walz is usually known for

It's also surprising to me and I've read articles shortly before where Harris campaign insiders basically admitted that Walz is not a strong debater, has never been apparently and the campaign even vetted him especially on that. His strong suit is rallies, and when he is with people.

So he's Trump, basically.

The difference is Walz is amazing on a stage as well as in small groups and one on one interactions with constituents. Trump has only ever excelled at the former.
