jezze0410 393
I have now watched the film twice, once at a Venice screening and once today with a friend in an IMAX screening. As someone who has watched but did not particularly enjoy the first film, I find FAD to be an excellent epilogue to the first film while being itself a better film - that is, its plot does not do enough world building (for general audiences) to be a film in itself, but the plot that was covered was executed better than in the first film. I personally enjoyed the plot; it is very slow, very bleak, and very wordy, but I tend to love many films like that. And while I would have loved to see more of Lee's character, I think her arc felt complete even in this edit. The performances are superb throughout, but a few of the musical sequences felt too long; the most successful musical sequences are the ones that are diegetic, i.e. the other characters react in confusion/bemusement as Lee/Arthur busts into song, though I thought two of the fantasy sequences worked quite well too. A review I watched online described it as a film that leaned into the inherent insanity of the musical genre, and I agree with that take. The issue in some of the fantasy sequences is that Lee is indistinguishable from Gaga, as there is no makeup/costume/genre/persona we haven't seen Gaga tackle. My friend thought Gaga's presence in the film elevated it from a 2.5/10 to a solid 7.5/10; he described her performance as an excellent neo-femme fatale (he worships French New Wave cinema). I gave it a 6/10 after my first viewing, but would now also give it a 7.5. And quite a few cinema-goers said something along the lines of "it's not as bad as the reviews say" while leaving the theatre, so the awful initial word-of-mouth might actually work to the film's advantage. A caveat is that I watched it at a cinema known for "high-brow" artsy filmy where customers are more open-minded and used to slow "aesthete" films with thin plots... I'm not going to argue with that because it's a fact. Her character is definitely underdeveloped and they say some things about her but they don't show it!!! Many interesting things about her but you have to think about it because it's not shown. She's not crazy crazy (or maybe yes? ) but she's not a good person she's literally a b*tch but they didn't do much with that

One of her origin stories is that she was a psychiatrist who disguised herself as a patient on Arkham to get closer to the Joker, and that's exactly what Lee does. Although it is a bit suspicious that Todd Phillips reversed the Harley-Joker dynamic, making Harley the manipulator and Joker the victim, I did appreciate this more villainous personality. She was so provocative and mischievous, I laughed so hard when the lawyer told Arthur that Lee told him a bunch of lies and she's just a rich girl who committed herself to Arkham willingly. Oooh... Can we include spoilers? I love that they did that but we didn't have enough time with Lee. I would've loved to see more about her, how she planned everything and how she executed it in a more detailed way (if that makes sense) It was a big opportunity and Gaga did the best she could with what she was given but she can't do more if it's not on the script or ended up being cut in the editing room... In this case, I think it was both but mostly the former I also laughed when that happened hahahaha It was so funny Edited October 5 by LG2008

LMAO I’m sorry I didn’t mean to come off as such a hater I love Gaga to death but to watch her talent wasted in such a way is so frustrating. Gaga actually killed the role and turned it into something unique and filled with personality despite the fact her character is given so little. It felt like Todd Phillips didn’t fully trust Gaga to bring the part to life with the way he underused her, which is sad because she turns in a career best performance. My dislike of the movie is really fueled by how frustrating it is. None of the faults are hers, it’s the director and whoever wrote the script. Also, in all fairness, I despised the first Joker movie so that probably didn’t help.

I loved all these aspects! Putting Harley in the driver’s seat of the Joker-Harley dynamic for once was a really fun reversal. Furthermore I wish the movie had been a true tale-of-two-crazies type of story, with an equal focus on what’s driving Lee. By the end of the movie, I wanted so badly to know what made Lee into the woman she is! That’s a testament to Gaga’s acting. (instead all we got was what amounted to a 2.5 hour epilogue to Arthur Fleck’s story ) Edited October 5 by SpadesToStart
Savage 1,707
I say this, not as the Little Monster that I am, but as a movie-goer. The movie is bold. It doesn’t promise to be anything—which is CLASSIC Gaga. She once talked about “making it [her art] unsafe,” and I genuinely think that’s what Todd dared to do here. There are layered metaphors throughout the film, and the ending is not as it seems (confirmed by an interview he gave). Is it the best movie? No! Is it a solid piece of work? Yes. Gaga’s best acting for sure. I haven’t seen a single review trashing her specifically, though that may just be my Twitter algorithm. The hate train for the movie DID, however, make it to my timeline. As you can probably imagine, Joaquin knocked his role out of the park. All of this to say, not EVERYONE hated the movie, and I highly recommend you watch. Much like Harlequin, it feels appropriate to call this movie a “companion” sequel to the first. Not crucial, but it expands the timeline of the story. 8/10, bias considered. ryansamonster 1,501
Gaga did great and that’s what I like most about the movie. I need to simmer on it… I thought there was a lot happening too fast with some parts, could’ve used more explaining or scenes. Then the fantastical musical sequences start happening mid sentence, with some appearing to happen in reality? I’m still unsure. I think there’s a lot for the viewer to interpret. RAMROD 104,107
It's good to me. Sure quality is way down than the first movie, but imho it is not the hot garbage that some people think it is. I feel like something changed during the editing process, cos the plot are all over the place. Louvre 909
Its been a bit of a disappointing weekend as a Gaga fan, but just keep in mind its going to be okay. She seems to already be moving on from the movie based on the fact that she hasn't posted about it at all in the last two days. She's smart and she loves acting and she'll figure out what comes next, I just hope she does an art film with an extremely low budget next so its impossible for anyone to call it a flop. plenty of actors had their flops before their hits. Margot had babylon before barbie, you never know whats next. Time to move on to LG7, looks like mother is ready.

Finneas 792
I read a lot of comments on latest Gaga’s publications on Instagram that are saying something like “you ruined the movie” with hundred of likes. WTF
lance13 1,004
I love Ricky......and that little smooch. SO sweet!! I really love this movie. Are we allowed to include spoilers now? LOL I'd LOVE to get into some discussions. 😀
princedeeblebleble 521
So we were at the movies last night and my feelings about it is comparable to how I felt about Pokémon Sw/Sh. Stunning visuals with some sour patches, it was fun but there's such a lack on storytelling and arc development on both main roles. Honestly I can't even get myself to call Arthur the Joker and Lee Harlequin cause they are not then in any way. Was it a terrible movie? No, it was relatively entertaining, but I found myself and my bf/friends laughing on how plainly random some plot points were and how randomly the musical moments started. Objectively theres no real story, no character development from the last movie (hell I'd say they downgraded Arthur), nothing to make me feel anything minus the confusion on what the movie is. What honestly annoyed me a bit was the false advertisment. The previews made it look like it would involve a lot more action and a Bonne&Clyde kind of chaos, but it was anything but that. The promo presented one thing (it all suggested towards a love story between Lee and Arthur), story moments another ( why was he presented in such a pathetic way, with no power, he's supposed to be ****ing Joker, not some dude who needs to be saved! Like the entire time I was waiting for him to take control as he did in the og, take everyone out and escape with Lee, but he did nothing but feel sorry for himself most the time) but the end result is something completely different (i felt like it was more a psychological study of an abused mans duality of who he really is versus who he wants to present to the world as a defence mechanism, so it's not a madness of Arthur and Lee, but Arthur and (fake) Joker). Overall as a big comic villian lover, I disliked the way the characters were written but even as a musical hater the musical moments were the best bit cause they contained the unhinged moments I wanted from A&L.
