Yep. Thats what I figured as well. But it felt like the madness for two was Arthur himself. Him and the Joker persona.

But then it’s like why did y’all announce it with him and Harley dancing 😂 I actually think you’re onto something and that would have been an interesting and easy line to use in promotion but my theory is Joaquin’s return contract stipulated minimal promo (since he hates it) and Gaga being Gaga is picking up the rest seeing as she’s been EVERYWHERE and he less so but that’s just added to the impression she has an out-sized role in the film. Honestly I think the movie just got marketed kinda weird. Not like suicide squad levels of bait and switch but just a little confusing to maximize Gaga’s star power to get butts in seats despite a semi limited presence.

whats interesting though is joker in the dark knight also has limited appearances BUT every appearance is a memorable scene. So I think in terms of utilization, they maybe just didn’t maximize her potential. Granted he’s a villain and she’s a love interest but still! I don’t think screentime totals are the determinant of impact but how that time is utilized

From what I seen:

- GP didn’t know it was a musical at all and find it distasteful since it doesn’t match the tone of the first one.

- They felt like the marketing lied to them thinking it would be twisted chaotic love story with Harley and Joker instead of a courtroom drama focused on Joker.

- Gaga fans hate it because they feel like she was only used to promote the movie since had limited screen time and even less lines.

- Comic book fans also hate musicals but also angry that Todd’s universe doesn’t respect the comic book lore.

- Musicals fans don’t like how it was too “scared” to be a musical in the sense that music didn’t move the plot forward. It felt random and forced.

- Fans of the first movie feel like the movie undid what they loved about the first movie and even think it was a direct attack at them.

This! I felt underwhelmed watching the whole movie. At some point they would start singing and I was just tired, the plot wasn’t moving forward.

that being said, hope ahaha had fun recording it, she clearly loves acting

Just saw it, hugely disappointed. The movie wasn't so great period but I was only there to see Gaga and I think the movie and its marketing was just disrespectful to her and her fans. She was in it for like 25 minutes... and most of the time she was just sitting in the background saying nothing. She was stunning and did an amazing job with what they gave her though, I hope that her next movie is a character study where the focus is purely on her.

Tod philips... its so over for you girl.

Also... why would they pay Gaga 10 million dollars to have her do NOTHING...

She got 10m ? Now THAT'S what I call a happy mistake.

AHHH

IT WAS SO GOOD

Gaga was great and like… compared to the first one this was such a step up. As usual, all the fan meltdowns were for nothing. The GP was living for it in my theatre - they were def hooked and entertained.

Gaga showed her singing chops when sense, and Joaquin sounds great - it’s giving another Bradley Cooper singing moment.

The film is beautifully shot, the plot is super engaging… and hearing the songs in Harlequin - in their context (they have different instrumentals) was sooo special.

Close to You’s moment… oh my GODDD. Cinema.

It’s the perfect sequel Joker could have had. Better in every way than the original.

Bestie I wanna watch the movie you watched so badddd :anveeroy:

I'm hearing a lot of "if you like the first one you'll be a fan of this" so I'll take that! Gave the first a rewatch yesterday and forgot how much I loved it.

Got my ticket booked for tomorrow :sara:

Despite the backlash, ive seen many people liking Gaga's acting and performances. They may hate Todd, hate it being a musical, hate the bad storytelling, hate the strange pacing, hate that it's not really Folie a Deux.... but Gaga being there is not negative to most. People were excited to see her, bec they know ASIB, some know Gucci.. she is a superstar so that attracted many more viewers. Those who havent watched that saw the negative comments, are still curious about the film. People are talking about the film, talking about Gaga as Harley. This is marketing for Gaga regardless. It does irk me when they compare her to the male gaze that is Margot, but surprisingly, there are less comments like this from my perspective. The music used is generally known and brought again to limelight, which is really a great homage to the legendary musicians and great music in the old days. Gaga gave her all, Joaquin gave his all... I saw that.

I actually may watch it again...and see it again in a diff lens...despite seeing many theories already online on why it ended like that.

I also like the fact that Gaga is learning and learning more things in the film industry. She will be able to decide better and better in her future film projects.

Lets continue to support Gaga and the film, but still be kind and free to be honest and critical on the film reaction. We never know when Gaga will do a film again. Still, appreciate this 3rd film era of Gaga, savor it, and hopefully really watch it in cinemas (not scene leaks online). I watched it alone and i felt genuinely happy to support her from this side of the world.

I suggest staying off Twitter y’all. It’s a hellscape over there. Just buckle up, keep your hands inside the vehicle, and just wait out the next couple of weeks - they’ll be rough lol

Haven't seen it yet. Looking like next Thursday. I checked out Todd on wiki and imdb and this is his first project since the original Joker in 2019, which I find surprising.

Quoting The Verge:

On its face, casting Lady Gaga to sing Hollywood standards as one of the most iconic and subversive characters DC has ever churched out was a brilliant decision. But Gaga’s Lee is largely relegated to the periphery of Folie à Deux’s story in a way that makes it feel like Phillips doesn’t really know what to do with her outside of letting her upstage Phoenix’s Joker in a number of musical fantasy sequences.

At this point should we all just lean into the critical panning and make it memorable that way?

I also wanna talk about something but I will try my best NOT TO SPOIL. But critics are pushing "WHAT THEY WANT" on the movie. Something happened in the film that THEY PERSONALLY DO NOT PREFER or they prefer something different. Which is, i think, that is just PLAIN SELFISH and unprofessional for them. I get that by the way, in life we want things to happen but we actually don't get everything we want. it's like that. i think movies are suppose to send message and not suppose to satisfy people's own "wants." maybe it is just me tho.

I 100% agree! When the movie ended last night my initial reaction was, “I’m disappointed”. Not with the whole thing, for me I was expecting it to lead somewhere different. But like you said, “it didn’t satisfy my wants”. Instead of judging the movie right off the bat though I took some time to sit with and reflect on it. This is definitely the type of movie that is about giving a message rather than giving the plot fans expect. I almost feel that viewers of this movie in real life are supposed to feel the way Arthur’s supporters (who want him as joker) felt after he said “there is no joker”. Disappointed and betrayed. Definitely felt like a social commentary on the glamorization of mental illness, and even fame. I honestly felt that the movie walked its talk and stayed true to the message, and for that I have respect, and am excited to watch again through a new lense
