FYI the broadway musicals original full duration were 2 hours and 45 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission. So this bloated duration on the movie is worrying, cos this might means the movie will add extra scenes that is not coming from the source material.

 

Aren't they basing it also off the book though?  Because that would certainly lengthen it.  It's a good thing because it's an EXCELLENT book

The musical's two big problems are:

1) the 2nd act is very rushed amd brushes over the actions of Dorothy and gang almost completely

2) many of the characters besides the principal players don't get a lot of depth or development 

So the first act/movie added time to develop characters and show Elphie actually grow up and the second will show us more of the context in which the plot is taking place
