Same thing happened around the Tortured Listeners album. Reviews were appearing online after a few hours including Rolling Stone who called it 'An instant classic' when, later, the general discourse was 'actually this kinda sucks'.

but in 143's case, is there any critic review saying this is a good album initially?

If her label was so against Dr Luke, they wouldn't green light it and wouldn't let their another artist  - Doechii to be on it.

I mean, it won't be surprising if labels give their bigger artists a little more autonomy on their releases, thinking they know what they're doing.

A lot of the media are just writing extreme versions of what they think people want to read at this point.

Finally someone gets my point. Yes Katy should be held accountable for her terrible choice and deserved her flop but they’re obviously doing for clickbait.

Really? Not radically different? Which one is it similar to?

Let’s not pretend it doesn’t sound like any other Ava Max or Kim Petras albums

Yeah, she is really dumb for that. Even worse if the rumors about her team and label actually against that idea but she's still doing it anyway were true :enigma:

Her label definitely wasn't against it; Katy's A&R is one of Dr. Luke's most vocal supporters and has said time and time again that he deserves a comeback.

I’m sorry but I just can’t stand the kid’s voice in Wonder no matter how many times people say it’s the “highlight” of the album. It reminds me of Madonna’s Autotune Baby song that I completely have to just skip it because it annoys me.

I wish critics were more fair tbh

Katy does deserve this low metascore, if you put Taylor Swift or Beyoncé's name on this same album they would be praising it till the pits

her A&R isn't working for her label.
he helped Katy to get signed to Virgin and A&R-ed One Of The Boys and Teenage Dream and then he left. Katy independently hired him to A&R Smile.

I understand what you're saying and don't completely disagree but reviews appearing a couple hours after an album releases is not uncommon or indicative of a hastily done assessment. Many large publications are given albums early precisely so they can have reviews out within 24 hours of the release, with the exception being surprise releases.

They wouldn't. They really wouldn't.

I'm also confused about why people are singling out TTPD as a proof of bias as if that album did not infamously get a much colder critical response than Taylor typically earns.

At least Autotune Baby was relegated to the super deluxe, wasn't even deemed worthy of the deluxe edition release lol

"Katy Perry's new record 143 is the lowest scoring album on the review aggregation site Metacritic in 13 years, based off 10 reviews in so far."

Yikes.
