She plays Elizabeth, presumably, Victor Frankenstein’s betrothed. This is how Mary Shelley describes Elizabeth in the book: “Her brow was clear and ample, her blue eyes cloudless, and her lips and the moulding of her face so expressive of sensibility and sweetness that none could behold her without looking on her as of a distinct species, a being heaven-sent, and bearing a celestial stamp in all her features.” Mia Goth, in other words. But such beauty was born to be desecrated. In the book, Elizabeth is brutally dispatched by the monster created by her fiancé. “I don’t know how much I can say about that,” Goth says discreetly, which suggests del Toro may have his own ideas about the original text.
