I can only imagine that Joaquin’s meddling changed the direction of the film in post production which is a shame. I think people also need to realise that 90% of the time it's a marketing tactic. For example, Gaga's team might think her chances of winning an Oscar are higher if she's "supporting" rather than lead, and submit her as that. There are so many "supporting" actress nominees that are basically main characters in their movies... I'm fairly certain Octavia Spencer won as "Supporting Actress" for Hidden Figures and she was one of the three main characters...

Ophelia 4,419
I’d say that the movie was marketed as Phoenix x Gaga because the appearance of Harley makes a huge impact on Arthur’s life, even though she’s not shown in the movie all the time. I’m not dissappointed with her screen time as much as I wish she got more talking, less singing scenes, to give Harley a bit more depth. Campaigning for Supporting makes sense with the movie and is a great opportunity for Gaga to actually win the award. ...has anybody seen my disco stick?
InsomniaMonster69 3,064
The real joke is that Arianas role is also considered as supporting role when Glinda is a leading role in the musical!

Copy pasting this: Industry insiders are already watching "Joker: Folie à Deux" and the film has received positive reactions from these professionals, who said they were surprised, after expectations based on initial reviews. Voters from some unions were impressed with the harmony and depth of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix's performances. A member of the PGA, the producers' union, said the project is "riveting, with breathtaking performances and an ending that will cause a lot of talk during awards season." Regarding the reservations, there was a desire for more musical numbers in the film, since these moments were described as the most "vibrant, explosive and dynamic in the production." Apparently, Warner will submit Lady Gaga as 'Leading Actress' for the next awards season with "Joker: Folie à Deux". Despite the buzz from critics pointing to the 'Best Supporting Actress' category, the studio and industry members understand Harley Quinn's role as a fundamental part of the script. As is already known, Harley appears less, but in the moments when she is not on screen, Arthur puts into practice what she ordered/manipulated/convinced him to do. Gaga has around 50 minutes of screen time, which is enough to work a campaign as the protagonist. The studio is confident and the unions see it the same way. In addition, all the film's promotion, since the first day, has focused on the names Gaga X PHOENIX, that is, the studio wants to treat both actors with lead campaigns.

Still a little bummed that Gaga is only in 50 minutes of this 2h20 minute movie but I am excited!

Considering theres a real good chance she doesnt show up in the beggining of the movie and he meets her later... once she does show up were talking nearly half the movie So this is great! I can live with 50 mins If u strip out the first half hour or so lets say in which she probably wont be introduced (since Harley is someone Joker at some point meets)... Suddenly 50 minutes would be like 40% of the movie scenes of the remaining 2h once shes in. Thats actually still quite prominent and hardly a fly on the wall It was obvious already even before all this review stuff her screen time would be less than Joaquins. 50min tbh is not that much less than I would have imagined. Maybe slightly less but not a huge difference
lolitamuse 277
If Ariana is in the supporting acrtress role, then that tells you how much a role can actually be involved and still be labeled "supporting". Technically, Glinda & Elphaba are both leading ladies, at least in the theatre world. Landing Glinda is to land a principle role. Glinda is in just a few less scenes than Elphaba in the musical, and presumably the movie. But she's everywhere, from beginning to end. So, the fact that a character than involved can be counted as supporting can tell you that Harley can also be all over the movie and still only supporting. Juanjo 1,925
Ya’ll are mad at this? Not every role will be main, and we have to be ok with that. What matters is that her work is recognized.
