Yeah, my Province in Canada has had chronically high insurance rates (some cities around Toronto a young new driver starts at well over $500/month), my brother had one minor accident when he was new and it surged to $790/month

 

Politicians way more competent and level headed than Trump promised major cuts to insurance rates. All their ideas did was slow down the hikes

Its already droped down to like $400 or a bit below. It surged so much cuz like on his second year of driving when he was still young (and male) so highest risk profile, he had an accident which made it go even higher than the standard high risk profilr of a new driver

 

But the rates did drop every year after that.

Its absolutely rediculous. Thats why most new young drivers either live with parents (hence why they can afford it), or if they moved out often they have to rely on transit

 

Like as u get older and keep driving record clean of tickets and accidents the rates do drop a fair bit. I was paying less than $182 for myself before getting married and now I pay around $260 a month for both my wife and I using the same car

 

Its still high tho. Insurance is insane in My Province. I think its a combination of:

 

- expensive mechanics

- high accident rates

- not enough competition in auto insurance

- a sue culture simmilar to US (those claims that u hurt ur back in the accident and need those $2M insurance payouts are expensive to say the least)

It's ridiculous in the UK too apparently, it's made the news recently as the number of rightfully disgruntled customers grows. I'm not a driver myself but my niece is and she says her premiums went up by about 50% for no reason last time she renewed. Madness.
