StrawberryBlond 14,154
Thing is, simply creating a country album does not make the committee obligated to like it. Plenty of full-time country artists don't get nominated every year, so to act like not getting nominated for an album which is your very first foray into country doesn't make sense. There have also been black artists nominated so it's not a race issue. You could say that Post Malone has been nominated and he's only just started trying out country but he featured a country artist on his latest hit and his album has a country artist featured on nearly every song. Beyonce barely featured any country artists on her actual songs (interludes don't count, Miley has always been a pop artist, Willie Jones is an American Idol contestant who nobody knows and the likes of Dolly can't even be heard in those backing vocals on Tyrant) and it's definitely not a proper "country" album, it's a fusion album. Beyonce herself states that on the record and even said "this is not a country album, it's a Beyonce album." There is such a thing as trying too hard as well and maybe the overall feeling in the country community that this album was more performative cosplay than genuine considering Beyonce's made a clear that she's going to be releasing a trilogy of albums each consisting of a different genre. Every genre will have a gatekeeping element, not out of being prejudiced but just a case of wanting to save the awards for those who devote themselves to the genre full-time. You can't blame them for not wanting to welcome everyone who dips their toe into the genre with open arms. Especially when they do it when country is going through a revival right now and there's been a lot of opportunists trying to get a hit from going a bit yeehaw. You know we don't really like it when someone like Post Malone is nominated in pop categories, right? Gaga never got CMA nominations for Million Reasons even though it could definitely be called a country song and we never caused a fuss. I would never expect her to be nominated for CMAs if she ever released a country album and I'm also not expecting Lana to get nominated when she goes country next year. No one is entitled to awards. Beyonce will for sure get nominated big at other awards shows anyway. Does she really need the CMAs as well? She never had to worry about getting nominated there when she made RnB and pop albums, so why does she need them now? 1
