CyanDante 5,848
Just noticed a bit of revisionist history going on, calling HoG a critical and commercial flop and what not . Thought it would be better to create a post for better reach. To jog everyone's memory - HoG had grossed over $166 million against a $75 million budget. It more than doubled its budget. And this was during the pandemic when everything was flopping left, right and centre. It was actually the highest grossing adult drama during the pandemic. For context Jessica Chastain who won the Best Actress at the Oscars that year for Eyes of Tammy Faye, had a box office run of $3.8 million Coming to awards season, Gaga actually got best actress nods in all the pre-cursor awards, including the SAG and the Baftas (none of the Oscar nominated actresses were in this list that year). She, unfortunately missed out on the Oscar, but getting a nod for Critics Choice, Golden Globes, SAG and Baftas is huge as well and an achievement in itself. She also got nominated from multiple critics association circles and even won a few. Most notably won Best Actress at the the New York Critics Film Association, who are quite difficulty to please. Hope this helps. Edited September 6 by CyanDante I'm not very good with Social Mediaᵀᴹ 7 4 2
FATCAT 58,912
Yea people call it a flop but it was nothing of the sort If she had been nominated for an Oscar, everyone here would be calling it a success lmao I can't be free if my hands are tied... 🧟♀️👰🏻 1

Phantomhive 1,948
Maybe the crushed expectations + severe lashings this fandom received the day the Oscar nominations were announced from others stans and film snobs was so traumatizing that some people were gaslit into believing that HOG was a massive flop critically and commercially In I fly on wings of winter.

Ridley's previous movie Last Duel earned only $30 M compared to HoG. Even in the Kingsman series, whereas the first two movies grossed more than $400 mil, the third movie earned only $126mil against a budget of $100 mil If it wasn't for the pandemic, the box office run for HoG would have been even higher than the final outcome. artdoll 45,285
I think ASIB's success largely overshadows HOG's and because ASIB was so massive, people think HOG performed poorly because it didn't live up to its predecessor. This is similar to ARTPOP coming right after BTW. ARTPOP was by no means a failure, it just didn't match the meteoric success of the album it followed. Both performed well, but were at a disadvantage due to following up commercially and critically successful juggernauts. Same with jfad yet it's a hard concept to grasp for people melting down over its rt/mc score it seems In I fly on wings of winter.
Gagaism 9,922
I mean, the thing is even though HoG was a disaster when it comes to production and final results with decent numbers, people will still consider it a flop because it didn’t get to be a blockbuster. I don’t see the fans actually dragging it because 1. Gaga had an amazing screen time and 2. She was amazing and praised on what she gave. The thing with Joker is that unconsciously we already knew the reviews would be divisive and I don’t think that’s the problem. I feel like the most frustrating part came when we learned about her supposedly super short screen time and the way she her talent is wasted in the movie, especially after her amazing appearance at the red carpet - which was an event for itself- , especially after all the teasers and the pictures released beforehand. I personally feel like betrayed a little bit, I’m sorry.

RichAssPiss 4,697
Reviews were mixed. Box office was gently positive and given a pass because of the pandemic. It was a good career builder. Showed she could open a drama without a soundtrack album. She received some strong praise, including by major filmmakers like Jane Campion. I think it was neither a smash nor a flop. And so there's some inconsistency in how it's remembered.

OliviaRodrigoStan 4,383
I'm glad I wasn't around during the release, lol. As an outsider, the movie seemed well received. Within the fandom everything is always dramatic . Let's see how y'all behave for Joker 2 HEART OF EVER-FROST
