Emily 600 Posted October 4 Share Posted October 4 Saw it today and I don't understand all the bad hype I do think it felt slow paced and the storyline wasn't as clear and strong as the first joker movie, but I feel that the way it was filmed and the musical scenes fitted so well in terms of portraying Arthur's delusions. Them trying to say this aint a musical (or a typical musical) is a total lie and it was obvious it would get people mad. Joaquin's and Gaga's acting is a 10/10 but the musical moments bring the movie down A LOT. I said, “Have people really been complaining?” And she said, “Yes!” as she rolled her eyes. She seemed so frustrated and it’s wild that she was having to tell customers ahead of time about it because of people being upset after the fact. So was my boyfriend (who is not a Gaga fan [but downloaded 4 songs from Harlequin]) and is also huge comic book nerd who is obsessed with Batman - and my straight nerd cousin also loved it. We’ve gotta stop listening to what others think and just wait to see how we feel when we see it. They don't want the music and they don't want Joker as such a pathetic figure, so yeah, it's not for them, especially if they went in blind. But if you go in as a civilian, so to speak, is it a good movie ? Yes. I found Arthur's story very touching. And the music ? It had a purpose and there wasn't too much of it. How could there be too much of it ? The story was about Arthur, and the music was just about all that was keeping him alive. I really enjoyed it when Gaga was singing properly because, well, of course I enjoyed that. and I enjoyed Joaquin's brief turn as a confident courtroom lawyer complete with southern drawl. Gaga's screen time ? Yep, she was nowhere near a co-lead (so no marks for marketing there), but I thought her character made perfect sense and I don't understand people saying her existence added nothing to the plot. Without her the Joker character just doesn't get reignited and Arthur doesn't fire his lawyer and give us the courtroom scenes. I didn't think there was any need for her to be in it any more than she was. She was there to give Arthur some sense of purpose, some semblance of hope, but he couldn't have some fullblown love story. That'd be some other movie. And the performances overall ? I was delighted with Gaga. No Ally, no Patrizia, no Countess, no Gaga, she created someone else and I thought she nailed it. I honestly wouldn't rule out awards nominations for that performance. I had a concern that her screen time was cut because her work wasn't up to scratch. Forget that. She was great in the scenes she was in, and I don't see a scenario now where she was just magically no good in some other scenes. JP was pretty much omnipresent and he was great. As a Dubliner I enjoyed Brendan Gleeson's performance. He just played his Dubness straight up. I know plenty of guys like Jackie. And who were the deux in Folie a Deux ? It wasn't Arthur and Joker. It WAS Arthur and Lee, both disturbed and finding a release through music. Not the greatest movie ever made, but I really enjoyed it and I would watch it again (which I don't think I would do with HOG). Arthur's story was relentlessly sad. I’ve seen worse Marvel and DC movies. And suddenly the whole world has a problem with musicals?? Or is this just a sensitive topic because it’s the comic book fanboys. Jesus people are seriously going insane with the long ass posts online dragging this. As a Gaga fan I do think she did well but could’ve done more with her character. The writing truly is the biggest problem here. I loved Joker 1 but fans have put it on a pedestal now. I remember this movie getting dragged too or getting called “overrated” for it’s massive success, Scorsese comparisons. People made fun of this being nominated at the Oscars. (singing in the rain umbrellas etc) I feel like right now it’s popular to hate on the movie and a lot of it has to do with not well thought out marketing. They should have marketed it heavily as a musical so that people would go in knowing and then maybe the complaints would be like “it’s not musical enough” instead of finding out and leaving. What gets me the most is that even Gaga fans fall into this hate train and won’t see the movie because of what others say. To me that is crazy. I feel like these fans just get influenced by what’s popular and not having an actual opinion about her or the things she makes. It also adds to it and makes even more people not see it.
