Real Panda 7,584 Posted August 16 Share Posted August 16 (edited) (I only included the parts I thought were highlights from the review) CLASH Verdict: Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars – ‘Die With A Smile’ ‘Die With A Smile’ is a one-off, a solitary pop star in an otherwise jet black sky – penned during one lengthy overnight session, it brings together Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, two artists whose walls are packed with gold records. Somehow, it becomes more than the sum of its parts – a homage to those lush 70s duets, it also feels profoundly modern; both artists shine, but there’s an undoubted chemistry here that lets ‘Die With A Smile’ have a character of its own. Bruno Mars leads the intro with a theatrical turn, before their voices blend to profound effect on the line “that’s where I’ll follow”. Lady Gaga has a rich history of duets, whether that’s her Tony Bennett collaborations or her turn with Bradley Cooper on A Star Is Born. There’s a feeling of mutual respect on this latest single, with both artists serving to push each other to different spaces. It’s camp in places, but that’s simple exuberant fun and hyped-up colour – the essential songwriting remains intact, plucking at those heartstrings. A single built out of “mutual respect”, ‘Die With A Smile’ exists on its own terms. Criss-crossing between dream pop production aspects, and those June & Johnny Cash moments, it pulls from the past before exploding outwards into its own timeline.
