You can't decide to riot because you don't like seeing as many brown people walking round the supermarket near you speaking a different language. 

Small villages where communities are close and they all know and talk to each other. There's been a lot of it here in England and also in Ireland - I'm not sure on the exact numbers but I believe the number of migrants they put in hotels exceeded the number of residents.

Also a lot of people in Rotherham find it in bad taste that after the whole scandal with the muslim grooming gangs, with the children victims feeling like they'd been gaslighted for years (appearently some were even arrested! Some of the fathers were also) and the predators given lifelong anonymity - and now they've put a load of male migrants in a hotel round the corner from an all-girls school! Surely you have to understand that's distasteful at best.

I wasn't justifying it, feel free to believe that. It doesn't affect my life. I'm giving the reasons behind it based on people I've spoken to, plus I have a unique perspective on this site as I grew up in Rochdale when this was all going down.

Yeah I agree 100 percent about that small minority of alcohol-fueled racist thugs who ruined it for the peaceful protesters with genuine concerns. People just jumped on the bandwagon as an excuse to riot and steal. Unfortunately the way Starmer and the rest of the government are responding, it's fuelling even more anger. Many feel he sounds like a dictator and knowing he's only been in office for like a month, its causing fear in people. I mean, a lady got arrested recently for handing out refreshments to officers! (Yeah I looked into it and there doesn't seem to be that much more to the story, other than the fact she refused to go home because the protest was on her street and all the attention was on her by this point so she didn't want to get followed home or have people know where she lives.

Never underestimate fear. We've seen it play out in history and what it can lead to.

Im 99% sure that person wasn't a muslim.

A lot of the people were angry because apparently a Muslim was outside a mosque with a knife or machete or something but I haven't seen proof

The best thing both sides can learn from this is not to lump a whole group of people together due to actions of a few! Many of these protests over the years had people of many different races, ethnicities, religions etc. The media did this with the Nottingham lockdown protests (two of which I happened to be there, not for the protest but because they were pretty much outside my block of flats).

However many feel they've been gaslighted by things like two-tier policing which is a big part of why these protests are getting worse and turning into riots - yes it's wrong but everyone has a breaking point. Keir Starmer and other MPs calling them all racist and far-right isn't helping. Many of these people have first hand experiences that cause them to join these protests, from people in small communities who all of a sudden feel outnumbered by migrants being put in big hotels in their area, all the way up to people who are just racist thugs, and everything in-between. Instead of putting a bandaid over the wound we need to get to the core of it.

Yeah completely agree, I was kinda gagged ngl to see the first comment discussing some of the real issues that are causing it so far into the thread. And I saw that response and it did prompt me to make that point as well.

It's a very weird conflicting feeling to see a lot of posts condemning racism and not feel like super positive about it I guess lmao. I'm appreciative for sure, but like anyone who saw what happened in Dublin a while back should have clocked this would happen eventually although I'm a bit shook at the scale. I think that's because it's a perfect storm of people being less well off too, so annoying as it may be, it's mentally relieving to tie all their problems to an easy target. Even if some of them have/have had some legitimate concerns.

Honestly it was truly a defeat for me this week when I had to mentally concede about there being some truth to the bullshit woke mind virus. My longest friend is a Conservative outside of this most recent election, and he's an awesome guy and the debates we get into genuinely have made me more educated about politics than I was before. And I always thought its just an overhyped catch all buzzword fed into people's psyche through media to deflect criticism and it sure can be used that way.

That being said, I was in the charli xcx subreddit when she was being hounded by her own fans for the song mean girls being about a somewhat maybe friend or acquaintance. And people were genuinely acting like you can't know or have friends across the political spectrum and I was shook. I got downvoted to hell for being like wtf? Probably not too many people would agree I hope but I hate that attitude, you shouldn't have a literal echo chamber of friendships to avoid being challenged on your stance to feel superior.
