Protests have once again descended into violence, with police clashing with rioters outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham. Demonstrators chanted “get them out” as they smashed windows at the Holiday Inn Express before being beaten back by officers.

There are also protests in Bolton, Hull, Southport and Middlesbrough, with thousands of extra riot police on standby across the country. Ministers have vowed swift justice to those taking part in the violence, with courts primed to sit overnight if necessary.

Footage filmed from the inside the Holiday Inn Express in Rotherham show some of the rioters making threatening gestures to those within, including one masked man who appears to draw his hand across his throat, (Tom Witherow writes).

Migrants inside the besieged building said they were “scared” as around 10 protesters stormed into the hotel and down the corridor.

Police have struggled to control violent riots in Middlesbrough as groups have set cars alight in what was advertised as a peaceful protest.

Crowds gathered in the town centre on Sunday following a week of violence across the country in protests organised by far-right and anti-immigration groups. The day saw cars torched, buildings vandalised and wheelie bins on fire among items launched at police. Riot vans flooded the area as well as the police-mounted and canine unit.

Around 4.30pm, following pockets of disorder in the town centre, a car was set alight on Parliament Road. The vehicle, parked close to Faraday Street, and near Baz Cafe, burned in the road as the flames reached a few feet high. Riot officers gathered around it as other members of the public looked on. Pictures from the scene show plumes of black smoke being sent into the sky.

On Sunday afternoon, police released a statement urging residents to avoid the area and confirmed nine arrests have been made so far. They said the main areas affected are Parliament Road, Waterloo Road, and the area around the university.

Can't begin to describe how angry, frustrating, painful and genuinely scary it is when you're getting emails from managers about taking additional steps to keep ourselves and the people we support safe.
