Rest in Peace, Sonya Massey <3

CNN- Body-camera footage showing the fatal police shooting of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman who had called 911 for help, was released Monday in a case that has led to murder charges against a deputy.

massey-bodycam-thumb-4.jpg?c=16x9&q=w_12In the footage, deputy Sean Grayson and another deputy speak calmly [watch the video- they are condescending and rude to her] with Massey in her home when she goes to the stove to turn off a pot of boiling water [video shows Grayson TOLD her to go turn it off]. She then picks up the pot [and pours it in the sink, video shows] and the other deputy steps back, “away from your hot steaming water,” he says.

“I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” she says in response.

“You better f**king not or I swear to God I’ll f**king shoot you in the f**king face,” Grayson says.

He then draws his firearm and points it at her, and she ducks and says, “I’m sorry”.

“Drop the f**king pot!” both deputies yell.

Three shots are heard. After a few seconds of silence, one deputy says “shots fired” and calls for emergency medical services.

“Dude, I’m not taking f**king boiling water to the f**king head. And look, it came right to our feet, too,” Grayson says.

Minutes after the shooting, Grayson speaks to another law enforcement figure. “She had boiling water and came at me with boiling water,” he says in the video. “She said she was going to rebuke me in the name of Jesus and came at (me) with boiling water.”

Grayson, 30, was indicted by a grand jury last week on three counts of first-degree murder and one count each of aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. He has entered a not guilty plea and was denied pretrial release, according to court records.

Grayson did not activate his body camera until after he fatally shot Massey, according to charging documents. The other deputy had activated his body camera when he first arrived at the scene, the documents state.

A review of the Illinois State Police investigation into the shooting “does not support a finding that … Grayson was justified in his use of deadly force,” the state’s attorney for the county, John Milhiser, said in a July 17 news release.

The sheriff’s office said it has fired Grayson. “It is clear that the deputy did not act as trained or in accordance with our standards,” the office said.

To some this may be "old news" as the footage has been released over a week ago, I believe, however- I have not seen any discussion about this here on GGD so I wanted to share. I can't stop thinking about this and I am so upset by it. I am embarrassed I didn't know about it till recently and I feel we should all be aware of this.  RIP Sonya. I hope Grayson gets life in prison.

The body cam footage VERY CLEARLY shows Sonya did not take one step towards the officers with boiling water, like Grayson claims she “came at them and barely missed them” . Absolutely insane this man was hired to work in a job where he is suppose to protect society

What the f***, he needs to stay locked up. The fact that he turned his bodycam off and turned it back on only after he shot her is confirmation he went there with the intent to harm her.

This literally is happening in my hometown. He was in my brother's grade at school, two years below me.

He's definitely had some issues and I feel really awful for his mom. She's gone through a lot over the last 5-10 years.

Anyway, the whole thing has been so tragic, but I'm glad that he's actually facing consequences.

Omg the shooter?? Wow yikes. Yeah I feel bad for all the ppl round him who have to deal with the backlash of his actions .

but of course I feel far more sorry for Sonya’s family right now. A very tragic and unfair loss

She did threaten to throw boiling water on him, but he did not have to shoot her. He could have easily backed off and pointed the gun on her to step away from the stove.

She did not threaten to throw boiling water on him. Clearly you have not watched the full body cam footage. :saladga:

she was sitting on her couch and the cop told her to get up and take the boiling water off the stove. So she did and she poured the water into the sink and he stepped away and she said where are you going and he said away from you and your steaming hot water and then she was offended that he would assume she would do something dangerous so she said I rebuke and then he threatened to shoot her so she put her hands up and kneeled down onto the ground saying I’m sorry and then he shot her. Watch the video.

It was a joke from what I saw, Jesus Christ these people are there to look after you and protect you from criminals not come to your house and headshot you because you made a joke while pouring out water in the sink

You cant joke like that with cops. Just like how you cant go to a plane and make bomb jokes. This doesnt mean its okay that she got shot though, the cop did a wrong thing because he could have easily avoided it.

I did watch the whole video. You cant threaten to throw boiling water on a cop (even in a joking way) because you got offended by him being worried about his own safety.

I mean you can if they're normal sane people and not ex marine smooth brained racist jocks like they seem to be in the US, the woman wasn't the criminal here.

Plus in the UK at least if there was a disturbance at a house the cops wouldn't have guns, only the military or anti terror guys have guns and low and behold random people aren't being shot on a daily here by police.

I'm shocked it took this long for this appear on this forum. Rest In Power Sonya Massey.

This is why my PFP hasn't changed since 2020. I don't want to show any kind of support I can until this problem is fixed for good, regardless of how long it might take.

Yes im against the cop and think hes a criminal, thats what I said in my first comment.

As for the laws in Europe, it sounds crazy to me im not sure if I support it. My country is full of guns but nobody shoots each other and we dont have a cop issue like America.

She never threatened to throw water on him though. She said I rebuke you because he implied she was dangerous with the water. She was offended by him thinking she would do such a thing.
