She definitely wanted it as a single at some point, but Interscope pushed for it because of the ballad trend started by Adele. (At least this is what I've heard.)

I credit You and I as the song that made me a fan. I wouldn't stan until ARTPOP, but I remember she performed You and I on Oprah (or something) and it totally blew me away.

I hadn't really given Gaga much thought prior as pop music was so not my thing. You and I - really an indie rock song at heart - changed my idea of what a pop star and pop song could sound like.

honestly she was so ahead of her time with this album, i didn’t get it at the time but i know if she released it today the singles/album/videos would be way more appreciated

The song was a cute local hit in 2011 but did nothing WW. 

Fast-forward 13 years later and it had zero longevity. 

Heck Gaga herself hasn't acknowledged the song in years.

Born This Way era really was such an exciting time before mass stan & troll culture. To think she crafted an entire masterpiece of an album in between sold out Monster Ball Shows, staying up for hours afterwards on her tour bus with Fernando and Paul. The energy of an early 20 something is remarkable haha.
