Didymus 34,380
Those shows actually proved that straight people are just as gross if not more so than the clichés of gay wh-res
imnotyourbabe10 6,102
That’s an interesting point. A few thoughts. I agree with the other posts. This sounds like it would also be criticized in the vein of the hetero counterparts. Also, there is nuance to gay lived experiences that are continuously reified by social interaction and construction. It breaks my heart to see the binary thinking, misogyny, internalized homophobia, racism, etc. that permeates our queer circles. (And to the other end, not being queer enough or performing the identity in an “acceptable”). I don’t know the show well enough, but I wonder why queer people would want to participate in some garbage produced by the dominant group (rich straight Hollywood?). For the sake of visibility or equality? Eek. Lastly, don’t most of us know these shows aren’t reality? Why are we still consuming these products that say one thing while our daily lives offer us a different experience?
Killa 17,667
It could be called gay Island (Hell or paradise?)
RenegAde 19,669
It will definitely not be a cute look for us but that should not validate homophobia.
StrawberryBlond 14,926
I've heard this LGBT take before and as a straight person, I agree. Sadly, there is a big double standard when it comes to how toxic behaviour in dating is viewed and accepted when it's straights vs gays doing it. The show proves that straights are just as toxic but it's reception is very "whatever" from the public, but from gays, it's seen as a problem with their culture that needs addressed. Love Island deliberately chooses the most stereotypical hot people, models and f-boys and from what I've seen in gay-oriented versions of dating shows, they rely on the same equivalent stereotypes. Flamboyant, outrageous and promiscuous, basically, because it makes good tv. Or they'd deliberately make sure it's 50/50 promiscuous types vs settling down types so there's lots of heartbreak for ratings, which is a tough watch. It's bad enough that straight people's emotions are messed with for ratings, they want to do it to gays as well and does anyone want that for their community? How is that progressive? To quote a gay Twitter user: "gay people deserve better, the straights can keep it."
