I trust 538's metrics and while it's close, they still have Biden on top. Presidential polling has been notoriously unreliable since 2016, you can't use them alone to make predictions for an election anymore and even if you wanted to, Trump's leads are nearly always within the margins of error when he's ahead in respectable polls.

This is why we need more than two parties. The Democrat party is an embarrassing one to support a lot of the time; obviously it's still better than the Republican party.

What I find disturbing is that Trump and his Republican Party has slowly eroded faith in America’s institutions to the point that they hold some responsibility for fostering the political violence we are seeing. 

January 6th is an easy example, however even with this attack I believe you can see the influence. I’m sure this would-be-assassin believed Trump is a criminal and I’m sure he thought Trump’s actions on Jan 6 were criminal.

If you have faith in the institutions of the U.S and believe they will uphold the constitution, then you have faith Trump will be investigated, prosecuted, will be found to have no special “immunity” and believe he will be brought to justice and seen as equal in the eyes of the law. Why would you try to assassinate him?

If you have faith in the institutions of the U.S then you believe Congress would impeach in both the House and the Senate to remove such a person from office. Why would you try to assassinate him?

If you have faith in the institutions of the U.S then you believe in fair elections with an informed public who would never vote such a dangerous person into office. Why would you try to assassinate him?

The shooter is deranged and dangerous and I don’t believe political violence is the answer to the current crisis in the U.S - This should go without saying.

It’s also not fair to pin this attempted murder on any individual other than the shooter.

I think it is fair, however, to talk to the political environment that has emboldened and stoked political violence and allowed it to flourish and it’s fair to speak about those individuals and institutions that have fostered this environment.

Regardless of the truth, people don’t resort to acts of violence (whether through a violent insurrection or an attempted assassination) if they have faith in the institutions of their country.

P.S. The Republican Convention starts today. Expect it to be sickening, as per usual, and to end whatever "truce" we see now, which was never going to be more than a pause anyway.

Supposedly, Trump has rewritten his intended convention speech, to call for "unity". I don't believe he has that in him, at all, but I guess we'll see.

It's 3:1 for Trump speaking in Fifa football terms and the 75th minute, but the match is not over yet. It would be strange to give up now, I mean, footballers keep playing until the 90th minute and sometimes the game is turning, as seen recently in some Uefa matches. Everything is still possible.

I think it's now 4:2 for Trump. Trump scored a legal victory today, but Biden scored also a point because Trump nominated again a middle white guy as Vice Pres, while Biden has a female migrant as Vice Pres who is getting votes from people who otherwise wouldn't have voted for her. Perhaps it's 4:3 because Trump misses the chance to get some extra votes from Latinos, hardcore females, etc. without having a Latino/Black/female Vice Pres. Not a strategic wise move from Trump.

Seriously, this position of "oh no violence, we need to take a step back and remind ourselves of what democracy means" crap only makes all conspiracy theories from the far right more believable. And I don't think they are giving up only now, a lot of them gave up when they let Biden still be the nominee an year ago, when reportedly he was already giving all the cognitive decline signs to ppl who was near him. 

Imo there's not much of a path to win for democrats, it's too late now. And I think most democrats holding an office deserve it, honestly. It's a bad strategy after another, we can't fight populist facism with roses and stabilishment, Biden almost lost 2020 by what? 60k votes? Do you really think that now that this MAGA terrorists have a ****ing messiah narrative you still can win with this corpse that only seems like a human when he's wearing a rayban?

Maybe only with Trump installing all that horrible plans from project 2025, maybe living in Gilead, americans can see that their president is far far far from being the leader of the free world, and way more like leader of this machine of crushing sweat and blood that they sell as freedom. That's what I'm holding onto right now, bc seriously, I don't have any hope that this election will end well, even if the democrats somehow wins it.
