It wouldn't really be an installation per se, she's the only other Democrat that's won on an active national ticket. Nobody else makes sense to replace Biden without it being an arbitrary decision on the DNC's part or a rush-job primary redo which would be a chaotic mess.

The question is, if Biden were to step down (which he won't but let's pretend) does he step down just as the nominee or does he step down as president entirely?

If I could bend his will, I'd have him walk up to a podium and say something like

"I stopped Donald Trump in 2020, I've done as well as I can as president, I've got dozens of major victories under my belt, and I'm honored to have served this nation. However, I realize my own failings and my own humanity and I now believe the best hope we've got at preserving American democracy is by putting our faith in my partner - Kamala Harris."

Then he steps down entirely, making Harris president and allowing her to run for reelection.

Either way, no matter what happens, these are unprecedented times. Literally history in the making. It could be the time a great nation clung to its existence and virtues or it could be the fall of the most powerful nation to ever exist.

And it'll all be decided by the citizens of that nation and whether they believe it's a bigger crime to be old or to be old and a bigoted criminal.

I saw some posters want to put age limits on being President.  After this year I'd be all for it.   That and not these Supreme Court justices for life.
