I listened to it :spin:

I subjectively had to skip a few songs halfway through 'cause they were getting on my nerves :messga:

Definitely not a project I'll ever be playing again but I'm glad everyone else in the world is vibing :music:

Back to my new jack playlist :music:

It's just annoying to see people claiming we just don't get it, don't understand electronic music and basically assuming what we like or we're limited. I enjoy all genres of music. That doesn't mean I like every artist's take on them. I'm also stumped as to why critics are giving it near perfect scores with the sparse, overly simplistic and repetitive lyrics, which is the killer for me. But hey, it makes a change to see someone getting praise outside the usual suspects.

The album is good, but it’s just so overhyped. Cowboy Carter and Hit me hard and soft are sooo much better.

Sooooooo happy that Charli FINALLY got her f*cking flowers with this one. Idk why some of you are so pressed, the album is brutally honest and immaculately produced.

and please chill out with the Billie album, because that one really actually isn't anything special - except if you're a top 40-pop stan, then I can see how that album would seem groundbreaking..

The only worthy successor to these two previous 94s :flower:

I’m sorry, but there’s no need to **** on Billie’s album to justify the praise Charli’s getting. Both are great pop records. Period.

It's pretty cool she's achieving all this with a weirder, electronic, pop sound, compared to CRASH which was clearly more her labels doing.

Atlantic was also the ones who forced N1A/Pop2 to be dubbed as mistakes, not albums for her contract.

Props to Charli! She's been grinding hard for a decade now.

StressedOut

I'm definitely taken aback by the response, but this is her quintessential album I think. It has the sheen of Crash, but the energy of HIFN/Pop 2, which I love. It is my favorite pop album this year so far for sure.

That was one of my problems with this and pretty much other Charli albums. I think Brat works because the songs are like 2 mins, 3 max. When Von Dutch came out I liked the beat but was glad it wasn’t that long because it is repetitive with the lyrics. Sure it’s catchy but of course if you repeat the same stuff over and over again for over 2 mins it’s gonna get stuck in your head.

Most songs are like this, noisy and repetitive so it surprises me it’s getting THIS much acclaim. Looking at Motomami which is around the same score, it was experimental with reggaeton and flamenco but Rosalía’s voice and lyrics made it work too so I understand why it got the attention.

Eh, I don't think it's that serious. Nobody's come for me for disliking it :anveeroy:

I don't like this genre so even done well, it won't be my thing and that's ok :gayhat:

Oof I hate to say it but it feels I bit overhyped. I love this for her though. Finally someone who isn’t another bland, blonde pop star getting the spotlight.

Even the sequencing of this album is amazing. I feel the first two songs are so easy to listen to and draw you in and then the rest of the album just holds you.  I can’t stop playing this record and I keep hearing and appreciating new layers in the songs. It’s just so good.

I mean, people brought her and her album up in this very thread already, comparing it to BRAT, so….I think I’m good

could you tell me why is it subversive/disruptive?

Sure thing.

Not being ironic or shady, i'm honestly wondering it. I like the record. But i do not consider, neither the music, release strategy or political ground, as subversive (against who? against what? where we expecting something different from Charli? doesn't brat sounds like something only Charli could make?). If anything, i find it a transparent Charli xcx record.

Being subversive isn't about being against anything, whether it's a who or a what.

That's the really cool thing about being subversive, is that it's not about pushing against anything. It's actually about letting go!

Letting go of the resistance (to replicate trends), expectations (labels and fans have of artists to be trendy and current, and letting go of the need for validation and approval so as to have the bold audacity to commercially release material in spite of its refusal to conform to contemporary norms.

Charli took a risk, considering expectations vary from person to person. If she wanted to play it safe and actually reach #1, she probably could have by working with certain and specific writers and producers, who see it as their sole job to get artists to that spot.

Instead, this record lives and breathes as a defiant act of performance art. She is literally playing "the brat."

Did she do it well? Was it a cultural reset? That's for you, the fans, to decide.

You are the fuel in the fire of the zeitgeist.

Sonically, I think ARTPOP was more of a subversive moment and transgressive disruption of the pop genre than Brat will ever be.

But if you're in any doubt as to why the industry is feeling relieved by this release, it's because Charli has breathed some much needed fresh air into a genre that was becoming a little more than stale.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I swear I thought the thread title lead to a quantum physics sequence

OT. Having a hard time with her music. Is it considered experimental much? I am trying to get to know her, but I think I should start with her other albums. Which one should I do first?
