Why does Gaga ask us to put our hands up so often?

It’s a bit of a performance tic. “Hands up…now scream!”  It’s a way to get immediate reactions from the audience and it it must be sort of fun and satisfying for a performer to be able to say that and watch it actually happen right in front of you. But I do think it felt a bit overdone watching the film.  Somewhat related, I remember watching a Nelly Furtado performance and her tic was to keep pointing at people in the audience. she did it so much it became distracting.
