“Happier than ever” remains superior for me, but this one is still a really well crafted piece of art and I appreciate it so much ❤️

She's changing the music industry. She's changing what songs can sound like and how they can be structured.

I mean it's a great album for sure, but let's hold our horses a bit... this is no Björk level of music shaping. But it's great that current popular acts like Billie or Rosalía aren't afraid of taking a few pages out of that book.

It really is one of the best produced albums I've ever listened to :enigma:

I meant in the sense that never before has such a mainstream artist done this before. Björk is definitely a specific audience as is Rosalía.

Billie is in the top 5 (I would argue top 2) breakout artists of Gen Z so for her to take these kinds of risks sonically and structurally is HUGE!

The more radio-friendly songs (LUNCH, THE DINER, even THE GREATEST, BIRDS OF A FEATHER) will be the ones more widely-released and promoted, sure. But the fact that the more structurally experimental songs even exist on an album this popular, by a mainstream artist, will have tons of impact.

Two of her biggest singles, bad guy and Happier Than Ever, both incorporate this shift in structure, although more muted than some of the newer tracks.

Tbh it's about time because idk about y'all but pop has become very boring structurally and sonically lately with a few exceptions.

Of course, I understand. While I would never consider Björk mainstream, let's still keep in mind she was selling millions of albums early in her solo career. Billie might be the it-girl of today, but others have come and shaped the industry before her, so I'm merely acknowledging that.

Well, it was half decent and that's it. I'm really not understanding the adoration it's receiving. All the tracks have very simple and basic lyrics and half of them are actually quite boring. To get a 92 on MC you have to create a truly lyrical album and this was not it. I liked Lunch, Wildflower, The Greatest, Bittersuite and Blue but Lunch and Wildflower were the only 2 that were above average. It was rather monotonous and one note for the most part. Happier Than Ever remains my favourite from her and I hoped she was going to build on that so was let down somewhat. But it turned out being passable which is all I ask for these days from people I'm casual fans of. The way it started off and how we didn't get good songs till quite far in, I feared it wasn't even going to get that far. Seriously, a 92? And it started off at 95 originally?! I really don't get why so many critics are this easily impressed by such simple lyrics. I've listened to far more lyrical masterpieces than this that don't even get close to this ranking.
