lavender blonde 692
I’m not American so can somebody from there explain to me why these protest are taking place at universities? In my country both pro-Palestinian/pro-Israeli protests take place at city squares/embassies etc. Why not protest outside White House/Senate/Congress? How do professors and uni authorities have anything to do with it?

I'm not sure about Ol Miss, but I know that at universities like Columbia and Brown, the students are specifically protesting not only for a ceasefire but for their universities to be transparent about where funds are going and to divest from Israel. In my country both pro-Palestinian/pro-Israeli protests take place at city squares/embassies etc. Why not protest outside White House/Senate/Congress? How do professors and uni authorities have anything to do with it? 1. Israeli university faculties (in particular Tel Aviv University's law and philosophy departments) have long collaborated with the Israeli army, supporting, co-developing and legally and morally covering military tactics that are widely condemned as war crimes by the international legal and humanitarian community. If you wanna dive into this, this is a good place to start. One reason to protest at a university, then, is to call for an academic boycott against these faculties. 2. Universities' tuition fees are used to invest in companies around the world, incl Israeli ones (sometimes even military ones) or ones that are economically tied to Israel in some way (ex. Google which provides critical support for the Israeli army). From Time Magazine: "About 100 U.S. colleges have reported gifts or contracts from Israel totaling $375 million over the past two decades, according to a Department of Education database." So a second reason to protest at universities is to call for an economic boycott against businesses that profit from apartheid and genocide. It is also to raise the question of transparency about how tuition money is spent. 3. History has shown that these protests are meaningful and effective. In the 80s, American student protests convinced over a hundred universities to cut ties with companies that operated in apartheid ruled South Africa. Universities often brag about this in hindsight, as a marker of moral and historical success, i.e. "being on the right side of history". Many students protesting today see themselves as a continuation of that vision, even if their university is not willing to uphold it itself. 4. Universities have divested from industries they find morally incompatible with the context of higher learning by their own volition as well. In the 90s, American colleges controversially ended their investments in the stock of the tobacco industry on moral grounds. In fact, as recently as 2006, more than 60 colleges divested from Sudan because its government was carrying out a genocide. The same moral argument was raised when Russia invaded Ukraine. So a fourth reason to protest is to call out the hypocrisy here and put pressure on these learning institutions to be morally consistent vs. performative and selective based on political reasons. Ziggy 14,054
Idk how seeing this wouldn’t make a Zionist pause. Like I’d be like ok so why are these people jumping on my supposedly righteous movement. Why is it attractive to them? Bc this is wild. also talking about people not from campuses swooping in, I only see that from the Zionist crowd. Like that loser with the cowboy hat and cigar at uchicago? Girl you do NOT go there; I can tell you THAT much. Also congrats, Columbia and Biden: you made this into an international spectacle lmao I’m so glad they’re being so humiliated. Frankly, Trump or not, he deserves to lose for being so resolute on the issue. Not budging at all. He deserves the utter humiliation to his otherwise very fine legacy bc this was 100% avoidable. It would have been easy to just make concessions but instead he sends paramilitary and emboldens weirdo alt right fringe making nice with the very bigots he ran against? Where do you see the Zionists? You don't see a single Israeli flag in the crowd mocking that woman. These were Trump supporters who wanted to counter-protest "leftists" after pro-Palestinians took down the U.S flag in other colleges. That's how they perceive it. I doubt they genuinely care about Jews or Israel. But the way y'all blame "Zionist" Jews for everything is honestly giving validation to people who think there's an antisemitism problem in this movement. First of all, Ziggy didn’t even say “Zionist Jews,” you read that into the post. That being said, I will add that plenty of Zionists Jews have cheered these folks on and have made unwitting allies with these far right agitators. Nothing especially controversial about commenting on just how unholy of an alliance that is nor is there anything even remotely antisemitic about it lmao. Nothing especially controversial about commenting on just how unholy of an alliance that is nor is there anything even remotely antisemitic about it lmao. Many pro-Palestinians have made unwitting allies with far-right agitators like Jackson Hinkle. So what? Does that give me a license to accuse pro-Palestinians as a whole of actions they haven't committed. Y'all need to stick to the facts. There wasn't a single Israeli flag in the crowd. When such "unholy" alliance occurs, you can talk about. And if we're talking about "unholy alliances", many pro-Palestinians literally support Hamas and Hezbollah, organizations that would execute or imprison people like me. Still that does not give me the right to generalize about the whole movement. So let's not get into that topic. The thread was to call out an instance of racism, and that specific incident of racism. I don't condemn either side of the protests as long as they're peaceful. PS: here's a pic of pro-Palestinian protestors posing with Jackson Hinkle
