Queer is definitely something that is described and understood very differently from person to person. I don’t see the issue.

I feel like he phrased it badly. He could have said, “I’ve surrounded myself around queer people and learned a lot from them and I enjoy a lot from queer culture.” 

It’ll be the equivalent of me calling myself “culturally Jewish, Mexican, Korean, Persian, and Russian” just because I grew up around Jewish, Mexican, Korean, Persian, and Russian people.
