StrawberryBlond 13,332
Billboard should really implement a rule similar to the UK - only 3 songs maximum (not just singles, songs) can chart by an artist in any given week. That leaves space for 3 popular singles/2 popular singles, 1 popular album track/1 popular single, 2 popular album tracks. I still think that system is ridiculously strict especially because it includes singles and album tracks. But 3 of each should be fair. In case any of you are wondering, it was Ed Sheeran's Divide album that caused this rule change. All 16 tracks (including deluxe tracks) charted in the top 20 on release week and his older songs were charting too, meaning it was just a wall of Ed for the meat of the top 40. It caused outrage with a lot of people feeling artists who would otherwise have achieved a top 20 entry were done out of their rightful place and that it was unfair to new emerging artists and a mere 4 months later, the new rule was brought in. It also altered sales-stream ratio for older tracks that had declined more than 3 weeks to allow them to exit the charts to allow new tracks a chance. With any luck, record labels will kick up a stink in the same way and there may be changes. Downside is, whoever is the last artist to get all their tracks charting will hold the record for the most tracks charting at once which is a record which will never be broken but it'll be worth it to stop chart monopolies like this in future.
