A few years ago it was going the opposite direction and everything seemed to be finally going in the right direction.. now it's flipped. Is it the podcasters and influencers? Propaganda working? People losing trust in officials after covid? I'm so confused I always found it hard to tell with US politics - there's a very US-centric understanding of the terms liberal/left/moderate/right etc which just doesn't match up to reality a lot of the time. That and a fair chunk of the population is a bit IQ challenged. But my theory is that it could be that society moving more to the left since 2016 had more of a reactionary effect, and newer generations of Gen Z are rejecting that. I think it's less about policy (most people probably favor healthcare, abortion etc) and more about culture wars. It's more of a rebellion against what they perceive as the "excesses" of the left rather than opposing abortion, healthcare etc. But if they vote republicans, policy will also be affected. And what current campus protests have been squashed by Biden specifically sending in the National Guard like Nixon did at Kent State vs just having to deal with local law enforcement? This is a bit like saying no one died of COVID under Obama 😂 You think that's what the students are thinking when their noses are getting bashed to the concrete ground, or watching it happen to their friends and professors? thatboyisarobot 152
So much banality in this thread masquerading as analysis. First of all, one poll and some cherry picked TikTok "data" hardly constitutes empirical evidence of anything. More importantly, if youth were shifting right in the US, it could easily be argued that this is occurring because there is no "left" to offer them an alternative. It's not that young people are suddenly and mystically becoming more conservative. People are alienated right now and the world is turning to ashes before our eyes. People want an alternative and the right has a vision for an alternative world, even if that world is made up of ignorance, depravity, and avarice. There is no "left" to provide an alternative because actual left-wing politics (redistribution of wealth, debt abolition, union politics, codification of human rights) has been neglected and, one could argue, actively suppressed by a genteel centrist bourgeois liberalism that travels under the sign of the "left" in the ****ed up political spectrum of the US. This isn't new information, either, it's called the dialectic of capitalism and fascism, and it's been written about since the 1940s and 50s. Youth are not being pushed right because of "radical leftism" because there is no organized and institutionally relevant "radical leftism" in the United States. If the argument is that people claiming to be leftists are aggravating online and that pushes people right, one could easily point out that there are just as many annoying fascists online (and largely are more successful and better publicized) that could potentially push people to the left. American politics confuses me on the best of days. But I do think that younger people are becoming more conservative in a weird way. And the ipad stare is just like the lead paint stare. Plus that unabashed outspoken rudeness. It all just feels so boomer to me Then again.. I don't actually know many kids irl so it could be online bias 20 hours ago, Dennis said: I'm not sure either. Like gym-going, women hating, looksmaxxing, mogging, women belong in the kitchen, men are the stronger sex, dominate the room, emotional manipulation, bitcoin bros, all that bullsh.it disgusting rhetoric I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. Dennis 8,391
New poll from CNN seems to confirm this trend.
