Taylor Swift teams with TikTok for exclusive in-app features

Taylor Swift is promoting “The Tortured Poets Department” on TikTok in a huge way under a special deal with the app — while other artists on her label, Universal Music Group, remain locked out of TikTok in a licensing dispute.

After Swift dropped her latest album — TikTok announced “The Tortured Poets Department” in-app experience, featuring what it says are multiple “first-of-its-kind” features.

On TikTok, Swift fans can dive into the album with playlists to create their own videos with, and they can engage in challenges to unlock exclusive artwork for their profiles. In addition, users have the opportunity to be featured in a Taylor Swift Fan Spotlight carousel by using the hashtag #THETORTUREDPOETSDEPARTMENT with their videos.

Prior to last week, and since the beginning of February, Swift’s music had been absent on TikTok, along with music from other Universal Music Group-affiliated stars, such as Drake, Ariana Grande, and Th Weeknd, whose music continues to be unavailable on TikTok.

That’s because of Universal Music Group’s ongoing licensing dispute with TikTok over the app’s compensation for artists and songwriters, and concerns about TikTok’s use of AI.

Crazy how Taylor went from fighting against streaming services and apps like Tik Tok for them not paying artists and now she’s the only one who will go and make an exclusive deal with them in the middle of a dispute with the rest of the artists. Seems like a lack of empathy, yet at the same time im conflicted cause she owns her music and can do it

It sure as hell isn‘t only her decision.

Universal is clearly gambling and flexing their muscles with these big releases and these deals.

This! She's obsessed with charts and money.  When she pulled her music from streaming websites many years ago, streams didn't count in charts and were bringing way less money than actual album sales. She never cared about the "smaller" artists, it was all a performance for her own interests.

I mean let's be honest - many smaller artists weren't onboard with UMG's decision, because for many of them getting that tiktok viral sound is the key to growing their brand in the current market.
And UMG isn't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts for bigger cuts for artists, I'd be willing to be my next 5 years of paychecks that any increase UMG get will go directly to UMG only.

that was never the case, she didin't "fought against streaming services for them not paying artists" if you actually read all her statements cronologically, you'll see she removed her calalog from spotify just because she was uncomfortable with the idea of the public having free and legal access to her music, she wanted people to pay because she tought the whole thing was an experiment and predicted it won't work, the revenue wasn't enough for her, so she went for exclusives like apple music for it to be only available with payed subscription, the statements about her saying she supposedly cared about smaller artists being payed better came after, in an attempt to put her image in a better light, as she was criticized for being petty and her stinginess, only to then come to spotify again with the the tail between her legs as she saw the increase in popularity and where the money was at for big pop artists like her, and having achieved nothing with her tantrums because they kept paying just the same, of course she put that façade of caring about smaller artist, but in reality she has always advocated for the capitalization and monopolization of music as it's covenient to her, and you see it has worked, it's incredible how so much ppl still buy the swifty propaganda they repeat mindlessly to make her seem like some kind of activist agaisnt powerful companies, she is a powerful company herself and advocates for it only.

A history of Taylor Swift’s odd, conflicting stances on streaming services

While promo is promo, I think all of these virtual things are boring. She should do a visual album or some performances, something different.

Some of y’all think this is all her idea and she’s sitting somewhere in a basement on her Laptop creating these deals etc

don’t forget that she has a whole marketing team behind her consisting of who knows how many SPECIALISTS who do this as a job!! Ofc she can brainstorm with them and approve/refuse certain ideas but this is bigger than herr

Agreed. Its not her only call. I’m just pondering how this may or may not conflict with her other stances
