Hipgnosis Songs Fund, the listed UK music rights investment company, once hailed as “the future of music publishing” is set to be absorbed into a decades-old US royalties giant, and the music mogul who founded it is to be kicked out, as the agreed a $1.4 billion sale to Concord Music Group.

Hipgnosis was founded by music executive Merck Mercuriadis in 2018 to turn music rights into a mainstream asset class, using the rising royalties from streaming, radio play and performances to provide income for investors and boost valuations.

The company stole the headlines as it bought up the rights to hits by artists like Shakira, Justin Bieber and Neil Young. But over the past 18 months, it became more associated with a tumbling share price, valuation errors and constant feuds between its board, shareholders and Merck Mercuriadis, who managed the song rights.

Hipgnosis' portfolio included over 140 catalogues, including: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira, Andrew Watt, Ian Kirkpatrick, Jack Antonof, Mark Ronson, Neil Young, RedOne, Rock Mafia, The-Dream, Timbaland, Benny Blanco, Tricky Stewart, Skrillex, The Chainsmokers.

Like I said in that other thread : "The mainstream music landscape is a dumpster fire."

To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if rina sawayama already did that and Gaga has a ghostwriting credit

And you are so right. I sometimes worry about the longterm prospects of the music industry, with all of these classic catalogues being bought up by large firms. It seems like everyone is cashing out since there's no money to be made in streaming.

What will the industry look like in 10, 20 years? Will the major labels even still be around? Sheesh.

Seems like a bargain for all of those artists, amazing for whoever made the deal. If Katy alone got $225M.. pennies for this.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
