Joker To Be Released In 70mm IMAX

just announced that they will be doing a 70mm imax release!! this is sure to be a great box office boost. showings for dune and oppenheimer in 70mm imax sell out weeks in advance, even for weekday matinees and even after the movie has been out for a while. there are only like 10 or so of these screens around the country, and something about the competitiveness seems to drive the desire to get tickets. we love it here!!!!!!!!!!

IMAX has a broader screen and more immersive sound system and 70mm means that it’s going to be sourced directly from the physical film* it was recorded on, which usually means the colors will be more vibrant, crisp, and no resolution will be lost in compression/processing (the film nerd’s equivalent of listening to an album on vinyl lol)

EDIT: Joker was filmed on digital, but given that the color palette was heavily inspired by old school musicals recorded on film, the depth and vibrancy offered by 70mm will probably accentuate the style. Also 70mm resolution is roughly the equivalent of 12K, so 70mm will also capture a lot of detail.

Maybe you're not an expert lol but why is that so? If the music is recorded on a computer/digital, how does vinyl sound better than played through the computer?

It wasn't shot on film though so I've always wondered with digital media how much does it benefit being printed to film when it's not the source

Probably just be for texture, similar to the way that people appreciate the warmth vinyl gives to albums that weren’t originally pressed on vinyl; film gives a depth and vibrancy to the shots that isn’t always reflected in digital, which would probably compliment a film like Joker where the color palette is heavily inspired by MGM musicals of the 30s-40s. Also, 70mm, in terms of resolution + quality is roughly the equivalent of 12K.

That'd be just upscaled or native 4K (IMAX digital camera resolution)
