At a growth rate of nearly 3% infrastructure is struggling Population support for immigration has also dropped after decades of broad based support from all sides of the political spectrom
Economy 52,834
Im extremely pro immigration. Enriches culture, helps offset ageing demographics, helps bring skilled labor while helping people get a better life. A win win for everyone But Trudeau and the Liberals really over did it. 3% population growth? You only get that in Africa now. And during a housing crisis? Not a good combination. Too much of any good thing can become bad. Even with these reductions targets will remain lofty by international standards still adding over 1% of population per year

Does the country take in 500,000 immigrants a year or 2.5 million a year? Or does the 2.5 million include the 500,000. Or do you add both of them and it's actually 3 million? We need doctors, nurses and construction workers. Not security, ubers, duct cleaning callers and students doing the same degree. I don't understand why Canada is being so lenient when the process needs to be way more selective.
Pennywise 36,080
Can someone explain to me why the housing crises around the world cannot be solved by… building affordable housing? I know it can’t be solved in the US because most Americans are dumb ****s who freak out in a Red Scare fashion when they see actual apartment buildings, but why not everywhere else? So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

Because the government in Canada tragically stopped building in the 90s, and the private sector refuses to build anything unaffordable. That plus a bunch of red tape and you have a crisis! Although it seems like the gov is finally taking action as they have disastrous polling rn bc of it

In addition to those 500k, there are also international students and temporary workers on visas which are seperate. Thats why over 1M immigrants came last year even tho the target for permanent ones is 500k 2.5M is the total temporary residents living here now but its a rolling door of people in and out. They want to reduce number coming in so that those leaving exceed the new ones coming in so that in 3 years the 2.5M temporary people living here drops to 2M Also its important to note about 1/3 of temporary immigrants end up becoming permanent, so that number gets added on top of the 500k as well

Its that roadblocks to proffessions end up making over qualified immigrants often stuck in these low skill jobs The selection of skills is actually quite strict

Although it seems like the gov is finally taking action as they have disastrous polling rn bc of it Many factors combined id say: - low government innitiative as you said. - red tape and restrictive zoning laws - NIMBYs who always get in the way of high density in their neighbourhood - The rise of realestate being seen as an investment rather than a place to live. This shift in culture creates an obsession with wanting rising home values - construction workers shortage (young ppl dont like the trades as much as 1970s boomer labor force) - Fastest growing population since 1950s Its a lot of factors combining at once to restrict supply while boosting demand. A perfect storm for a housing crisis

That is exactly how it can be solved, it's just no one wants to do that. It's not profitable for the developers (or less profitable), it's not desirable for landlords because they could no longer charge insane rents because they know people have no where else to go, property value would go down, etc etc Basically the government just has to nut up and get it done themselves but they don't, they set weak targets and bandaid legislation and drag their feet. I live in a mid-sized city and my city council meetings are truly deranged

Both my parents are highly educated and had great jobs in communist Poland, meanwhile in Canada my dad has been a taxi driver and pizza delivery guy for nearly 20 years (he worked briefly in traffic control but the company went bankrupt) and my mom worked at a wafer factory for 15 years and went back to college to become a personal support worker. She's 65, has cancer and struggles to lift one arm and yet she is lifting and caring for people her age or even younger sometimes for essentially minimum wage. The job market here is just garbage. Most young and educated Canadians leave because the pay in other countries is much better.
