Russian election: Putin claims landslide and scorns US democracy

MOSCOW, March 17 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin won a record post-Soviet landslide in Russia's election on Sunday, cementing his already tight grip on power in a victory he said showed Moscow had been right to stand up to the West and send its troops into Ukraine.

Putin, a former KGB lieutenant colonel who first rose to power in 1999, made it clear that the result should send a message to the West that its leaders will have to reckon with an emboldened Russia, whether in war or in peace, for many more years to come.

Id be fine with that if it was a good leader. But democracy very rarely allows that to happen even if someone great gets elected and dictatorships are always abusive

 

IMO one of the drawbacks of democracy is the constant shifting of power changing strategies and undoing policies very often before they even get a chance to start working. Even if the most competent party gets elected eventually ppl drop it for another one cuz things can never be perfect and they become branded as incompetent and ppl look to someone else to fix things (literally seeing that happening in Canada right now)

 

Everything starts to become very short term thinking as a result cuz theres no consistency

The flip side of this though is that some administrations will remain in power long enough to quietly chip away at the foundations of that democracy. Then you end up with Puta types

I do wish the public's attention span was a bit longer but you know what they say. "A person is smart, people are stupid".

Agreed. Thats why i said "drawback". As in i agree democracy is still better than authoritarian systems but its still far from perfect

 

The biggest issue is in democracy ppl have the power to elect the people. But a high percentage of those people are also either stupid or impatient. Whats going on here in Canada rn for reasons like that is irritating the crap out of me.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the USA only allow a President to serve two terms maximum? 

Not that she's a fine example (considering the horror she inflicted) but Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister here for 11 years and 6 months, because Tory voters liked her and kept voting her in.

It's hard to add my opinion onto yours without implying I disagree with you 

Pretty sure we already talked about how that happens in the US with our two political parties. Republicans gut regulations and slash taxes which creates amazing short term conditions but wreck us in the long term. Democrats tighten the belt and gear more towards long term stability which usually starts to kick in just in time for them to lose an election to a Republican

The 22nd amendment forbids a person from taking office as president more than twice, each term being 4 years.

I would have loved for Obama to be in office for two 6 year terms (US senators have 6 year terms) but then Trump would have also had that opportunity and imagine the damage he could have done with two more years

I lived in Ireland during the Obama administration and we loved him so much.

Not a day goes by where my grandmother doesn't say "Michelle Obama should run for President."

While I think she would stand amazing chance, I can't see her wanting to live in the White House for another eight years.

Yes, our 2 term max was set by George Washington and was pretty much respected until FDR ran and won 4  after he died congress finally decided to make an official term limit.

I genuinely believe 8 years is a good length for presidents, if the general population liked their run it’s always been standard to just vote in the VP (Taft, Bush). But that’s also usually when the cookie starts to crumble.  essentially 8 years is a great time for someone to make a solid reputation and then get the hell out before **** hits the fan. Our government just isn’t designed for consecutive “wins” with how power is distributed and when something falls apart we just point to the president even if it’s out of their hands.

Idk about Michelle being president

She's a cool lady and all but I actually prefer politicians to hold political office. She's more of a public figure who was able to sway the hand of the president from time to time, as most first ladies are.

She also pretty much had the bags packed in 2015 ready to gtfo of there

I'm sick of this pendulum garbage where we vote in a Republican, they destroy the country, a Democrat rebuilds it, then another Republican wins, etc etc
