This is actually pretty bad lmao. The US gov’t’s definition of foreign malign information is overly broad and giving them license to ban apps/speech on the basis of that is pretty authoritarian. The DHS defines foreign malinfo as, “Any information that drives a wedge between the US populace and the government.” Notice that they don’t care about the *veracity* of the info, just the fact that, if they deem that the source is foreign, that they should be able to tamp down on it. IMO, dangerous precedent. Dealing with foreign interference cannot be blanket policy, it has to be a case by case basis and foreign interference has to be tied to a clearly defined motive if they want to use it as a basis for trying to censor anything.

I don't know that this is true:

https://www.cisa.gov/topics/election-security/foreign-influence-operations-and-disinformation#:~:text=Misinformation is false%2C but not,group%2C organization%2C or country.

"Malinformation is based on fact, but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate.  An example of malinformation is editing a video to remove important context to harm or mislead."

I do agree with the need to make sure definitions are not too vague. But there is valid reason to worry about misinfo, disinfo and malinfo, being weaponized.

Let's not forget not long ago, "letter to america" from Bin Laden was trending on TikTok and many young people were misled into thinking he was some freedom warrior against imperialism.

Likewise, Russia uses mainly twitter, to mislead people into thinking they're the good guys and Ukrainians are nazis etc.

In my own experience, I use social media a lot, and I've seen enough to conclude something needed to be done.

For example, all social media platforms need to implement fact-checking, either by a dedicated team, or contributors (like community notes on Twitter).

Algorithms need to become more transparent. For example a recent WSJ investigation unveiled how pro-CCP narratives were amplified on TikTok and anti-CCP narratives were suppressed.

I mean are they going to ban Temu, Shein, and other companies that aren't US based? This is stupid. Worried about data being shared but could care less about the children dying everyday because of guns.

The issue is when a government gets to decide what qualifies as misinformation. Better to let people think for themselves and make up their own minds about stuff.

Banning an entire social media platform over perceived "misinformation" is very worrying

Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan

Sells its stake to who? Let me guess, an American company who will then control the content of the app?

Yeah, sounds like a classic shakedown to me.
