Most people don't dislike Sam's music, if a female popstar released the same songs they would probably love those songs. That's why many of us think the hate he receives is rooted in transphobia. They hate him and the way he has decided to express himself, they don't hate his music. And if you can't see this it's probably because you don't want to. Most people don't dislike their music? Even if that were true, it means that the people who do dislike it, dislike it because they're non-binary? This makes absolutely no sense. I can assure you (as a studio musician) that it isn't Sam that's the problem. It's the terrible music, awful marketing strategies and the obvious contempt they have for the listener. Edited March 8 by Westerosi I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. I dislike his recent music, it’s hot garbage. If a female artist released, the songs remain garbage imo.

I don't deny they are the victim of hate but remember that this is a fan forum and fans are allowed to think an artist's music sucks without thinking the person doesn't have the right to be who they are. No, I won't! There is so much transphobia on this site, and anytime Sam does ANYTHING, people drag them to shreds citing how extra they are, and how unnecessary it is. That has nothing to do with their music or artistry, but rather who they are and how they identify. Edited March 8 by JohnnyVersace

That has nothing to do with their music or artistry, but rather who they are and how they identify. A lot of people here actually liked Sam in the early years of their debut, especially when it came to identifying with the subject of the album, which was falling for someone who didn't feel the same. There were a bit of sour grapes that arose when they went head-to-head with Gaga for the song Oscar and won but that's just classic fanbase shenanigans in these modern times. But the massive image change with Gloria was one that was polarising regardless of your views towards the LGBT community. The public is always highly critical of an image change from sedate to sexual. We ponder how much of this is genuine and how of it is a marketing strategy to sell music. If it doesn't come off genuine, we're more likely to have a negative reception of it. This happens to female artists all the time, so I don't think gender identity plays a role to the extent you may think. I've never seen such Sam hatred until the Gloria era so if bigotry was behind it all, it would have been much louder much sooner.

I personally know many folks who never cared for Sam Smith, and this is from before they came out- or even recent ~envelope pushing attention stunts~ (which get old quickly, and Madonna and Gaga can attest to the fact that stuff like this makes the GP turn on them). I think saying "it feels rooted in transphobia" gives an impression that that's all you see when you look at Sam- them being nonbinary. They are more than just that, and it doesn't excuse them from the criticism that anyone else gets on this site.
jimmytimestep 2,453
I fully acknowledge my cattiness with the gif earlier. And I stand by it. I honestly *LOVE* Sam, but I dislike their album, and regardless of if this tease is for a deluxe, or a new album, the execution feels cliché and behind the times. That’s my opinion. I believe Sam has something unique to say and special to offer but their management and label are forcing radio hits rather than allowing a full sense of their expression. again, this is my opinion. Anderson123 35,599
I was just listening to No God and Lose You the other day and these are the only ones I’ve liked since The Thrill of It All but was wondering where they going next apparently with that “new image” rumors. I don’t think Gloria as an album had the momentum to justify a Deluxe version a year later but good for those who enjoyed it I guess. Unholy was a massive hit but seems like the song was just a random standalone single that was successful and decided to put it there with a bunch of other sessions they made to make it an album.
