Ariana debuted at #1 in the world charts, world charts excluding US, and the Hot 100. It's also still in both Global charts top 10, I wouldn't say it was a massive bomb at all

She's generally more popular among younger audiences than Beyonce or Ariana, for example. What she lacks in stans she makes up for in general listening popularity. 

She'll always come last against those three in the chart race, but her streaming performance is insane. I think by end of year she'll be the top female artist for streaming after Taylor Swift (who's iconically merely gaming the system with these re-records).

Exactly. I think people look at Ariana and all other popstars and think they are more popular but Dua’s music has longevity globally and in the long run she beats every single one of them. 
For some reason it takes some time with Dua’s music to be recognizable which is not common with other popstars mentioned.

Houdini sounds like a solid track #7, not a lead single, and unfortunately Training Season doesn't sound much more promising. The singles from FN were so magnetic that, since she hasn't really switched up her sound to a considerable degree, we can't help but compare, and this new stuff just isn't as good

(which sucks cuz she killed it at the Grammys and only seems to be improving as a performer)

That’s honestly been my biggest issue with her. I respect the formula she’s got, but there’s really nothing about her work + performances that resonates with me

I keep hearing these frankly ridiculous claims that Houdini sounds too similar to tracks from FN and all I can wonder is have any of those people making claims like that even listened to FN? Houdini sounds nothing like FN, it is far more synth heavy, reminds me of some of the Weeknds work. Just because Dua's songs are always going to be danceable does not mean there are not significant differences in the sound from era to era. What track on FN does Houdini sound like? every time I ask that question I never get a response😂

Houdini is a fun pop song with great production. Quality wise, I think it is slightly superior to DSN because of how much more interesting the production is. DSN was cute but not "so magnetic" like you claim, no need to try and make her past lead some sort of sacred cow when it was not even one of the better tracks on Future Nostalgia. Her second singles are always better and I am expecting Training Season to be the Physical of this era.

I think Dua will be ok with this era. Houdini is that bitch, I still listen to it daily. Miss Lipa is the gift that keeps on giving. Training Season seems very promising.

She set the bar really high with FN. not just herself but a lot of other pop peers tbh.

Houdini sounded like a B-Side from Future Nostalgia but the way it's been marketed and promoted doesn't feel like it would have fit with the FN era so it makes more sense to align with DL3. Houdini is a fun song but it's not a smash for me at least. It was the same with Don't Start Now--my least favorite track off FN so I'm hopeful that Training Season goes further the way Levitating ended up doing at that time (and yes I'm still very bitter that no one ate up Physical).

I've been thinking for the last few weeks that Dua lately is really reminding me of Katy in 2015. She was everywhere, serving hit after hit, but then after a couple of years you realize there's not much of persona to latch onto behind her music to keep her starpower alive. I love Dua, but all her music is starting to sound the same to me. She doesn't have an interesting perspective or point of view. We basically know nothing about her. Her lyrics are so surface level and impersonal that they could all have been sung by anyone. In performances, she also lacks connection to the audience (compare her Grammy's performance to Miley's). She doesn't do anything that gets people talking (a little controversy could actually help her). What is her image?? Her voice isn't unique, her sound isn't unique, her lyrics aren't unique, her style isn't unique, but it is easy to sing along to her music...that all leads to Katy Perry syndrome
