I'm not sure she was forced to change them? I get what you're saying but it sounds like she's just forward thinking and considerate and she herself changed them to be more inclusive. BTW particularly was always meant to feel inclusive and at the time the language was. But context and language do change so I understand she wants to continue the message

Yes I phased it wrong, I don't think she was forced to, it was a general discussion because I feel like the audience should try to understand her message without changing the lyrics or focusing too much on two words that weren't used to denigrate or stereotype someone. You're right though

There's a thing that nowadays seems to be kinda lost, mostly in the United States, that's called context: Born This Way it's an equality anthem with an extremely positive message and such terms are not wrong by any means when used in it. I get that some may find them offensive but context allows our brains to interpret a message and locate it under a certain light, so I'll never understand the need to change the lyrics, it's like saying "okay, you're not able to think critically about my message so I'll give it to you in a more plain and safer way".

But it's just a personal view on it, I understand that she has to adapt to the audience's changes too

I’m not sure it’s entirely fair to say that the terms aren’t “wrong.” The song’s text provides its own context, sure, but it also exists in a broader socio-cultural context.  You could definitely say she didn’t have ill intent, but referring to Asian people as oriental, from a historical context, is pretty offensive and has been used to reinforce some ugly stereotypes. Also, even within the context of the song, I think what makes it a clumsy lyric is that the section is clearly devoted to race/skin tone (black, white, beige…) and then she threw in a cultural subgroup and a continental categorization. Whether it’s intentional or not, that framework makes it sound as if she’s using “chola” as a placeholder for “Latino/a” and “orient” as a placeholder for “Asian,” which are both not especially accurate, could be considered offensive, and undercut the meaning of the song. Again, I agree that she never had ill intent, but I think all context clues actually work against the original lyric.

I remember Gaga getting backlash for these BTW lyrics in 2011 when it was first released. So this isn't new criticism! And I'm glad she's changing it in hopes of making it more respectful and inclusive, the whole point of the song to begin with!

I think it is important to note that if you are a non-latino/non-asian fan you can ofc have your opinions on the lyric change but at the same time understand/grasp that your opinion will not hold as much weight as actual Latinos/Asians when it comes to these terms!
not trying to police people but just trying to highlight that these lyrics hold weight for certain groups that you will not understand.

As a latino though my family knows I love gaga and they and I have never had an issue with the “Chola” line but I also can’t discredit that there are latinos who don’t feel comfortable with a white woman referring to latinos as such by stereotyping latinos as Cholos/Cholas. You guys have to acknowledge that no matter intention what you’re saying at the end of the day is what your saying - the words you choose are important!

I can say though, within the latino community there’s a lot of differences in opinion over “Latinx” so I’m kind of glad she didn’t go with the remix lyrics lol

Finally. It definitely needed to happen. She meant no harm by writing that line but it’s just tacky in this day and age. I thought she would have changed much sooner tbh but better late than never :laughga:

Y’all. stop. it’s weird to say “orient” in 2024. It was weird in 2011. I remember, I was there lmao it did give a bit of pause but that wasn’t going to be the scandal that took over compared to the Madonna one.

It’s what your grandpa who flew in WWII says lmao it is racist, context regardless. If anything that should make a change of lyrics easy bc it’s a cosmetic issue not one of meaning or intent, though that also shows a bit of lyrical laziness on her part that, frankly, we can and should encourage her to rectify lol no other empowerment anthem of its caliber has to resort to questionable slurs to get its point across and neither should hers have to.

Exactly, exactly.

The thing is, if she wants this song to stay relevant and impactful in 2024 and beyond she has to change it up. Young people today hearing BTW for the first time are going to find that lyric cringe at best, and actually offensive and harmful at worst, which is obviously the opposite of what she wants.

I wonder if she’s gonna do this with Gypsy too or just never perform it. She barely includes ARTPOP stuff now anyway and she has a lot of great and new material, can’t bring back old songs that often.

Born This Way is one of her biggest hits and the most important one so this was great for her to do.

Thank god.  The original is very cringe even on its release day back in 2011.  Should’ve never made it onto the final recording

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

I can't believe she's still never done a Piano Versions album, or a solo Unplugged. It's one of her strongest qualities. That she can do dance pop, and play her hits solo on piano.
