InTheCloset 21,780
The 2024 General Elections happened yesterday in Pakistan. A historic 128 million people voted but that is not what makes it memorable. There are 3 main political parties here. Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf PTI (led by Imran Khan), Pakistan Muslim League N PMLN (led by Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz) and Peoples Party of Pakistan PPP (led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari) PTI won in 2018 because of youth and the younger generation of voters. The leader Imran Khan who became the prime minister later held the other leaders accountable for their crimes. Military (which basically governs itself) was also held accountable. They had trials and were convicted and send to prison the crimes being corruption, money laundering, offshore accounts, luxury apartments overseas etc. However using their influence they got out and all the other political parties formed alliances with each other resulting in a greater opposition that overthrew the government. The current government is of PMLN. They formed an even greater alliance with the military and military having the power they have claimed Imran Khan had taken illegal gifts from and they also claimed his marriage was illegitimate (which is punishable under sharia law). Judges were bribed and harassed and blackmailed and Imran was found guilty and was sentenced to 31 years in prison in one case and 10 years in other. His party, PTI, was dissolved, his electoral sign was removed. This happened just weeks before the elections Days before the elections his party wasnt allowed to campaign. They were beaten and eventually silenced. People were scared. So they started to hold virtual events, online campaigns but whenever this happened the government would turn off internet services and temporarily ban social media sites. This all didnt stop the younger generation. People secretly used social media including twitter and facebook and whatsapp groups and organized themselves and educated themselves. Here is the fun part, even without an official party, people from PTI ran as Independent candidates (candidates dont belong to any party). Each area had a different electoral symbol. Voters stayed calm and stood in lines for 7-8 hours to cast their vote. As results are being announced the Independent candidates (who belong to PTI) are winning. Electoral and popular vote. However currently military has taken over polling stations, people inside are reporting that a massive rigging is taking place. News channels werent allowed to report results for 3 hours and in those hours the votes shifted (which is normally impossible) and a major increase in number of votes of the other parties. People are sending recordings of army and personnel rushing inside polling stations and burning votes cast for PTI also using force and violence to get their way. Most probably because of rigging Imran Khan and PTI wont win (RIP democracy) but the way the people responded especially the younger generations is commendable. #RaidTheCloset
Karl 3,575
Wow, that's absolutely awful, democracy lost But good on the people for organising themselves, just goes to show though that corruption and tyranny can't be overcome in some situations which is sad. This is what I fear if trump wins when his 4 years are up
Ultimecia 6,850
This is what happens when money and power comes first. Good on the people for not being complacent, keep fighting for what is right! Time. It will not wait, no matter how hard you hold on...
Micmaky 917
It’s kinda hilarious to read the political history of Pakistan. There’s only 1 PM that completed a full term, everyone else was kicked out with a no confidence vote, a coup d’état or assassination. They should just give up on this farce of democracy as they are for from it
