Dennis 8,391
President Joe Biden said he ordered the strikes “in direct response to unprecedented Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea.” This comes after the coalition, issued a "final warning" last week, urging the Houthis to stop the attacks, which was ignored. In recent months, the Houthis attacked 27 ships, causing Egypt's Suez Canal revenue to drop by a whopping 40%. This is especially important for Egypt since it nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956 and relies on it for its economy. With Isr*el being already at war, the U.S fears that the collapse of the Egyptian economy (a strategic ally) will add more uncertainty to the middle east. “Today, at my direction, U.S. military forces—together with the United Kingdom and with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands—successfully conducted strikes against a number of targets in Yemen used by Houthi rebels to endanger freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most vital waterways,” the president said in a statement released by the White House. Biden added that he will “not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.” https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/11/politics/us-strikes-houthis-yemen/index.html https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/egypts-suez-canal-revenues-down-40-due-houthi-attacks-2024-01-11/

LOVEDRUG 11,250
what's happened in yemen over the past decade is absolutely devastating, one of the most overwhelmingly tragic humanitarian disasters of our lifetimes, and millions have suffered. but the houthi are a particularly destructive and insidious group, and their recent indiscriminate attacks against civilian cargo ships are simultaneously unacceptable, shocking and borderline unbelievable. air strikes against houthi infrastructure are the right course of action, providing they are against houthi infrastructure in particular. regardless of the side you're on in the israel-hamas conflict, i think everyone can agree the bombing campaigns were pretty indiscriminate and relentless, and military action should always be taken with as delicate and precise of care as possible. Edonis 28,974
Let's be frank for a second. Any form of armed resistance in the Middle East that goes against parties the US view as favorable to their diplomatic relationships in that region are deemed as destructive and relentless. Claiming to target "Houthi infrastructure" (whatever the **** that means lmao) in an attempt to silence them for their blockades of cargo ships destined for Israel isn't going to fly with that group. To be blunt: this isn't ISIS and this isn't Al-Qaeda and a lot of politicians are in for a rude awakening when they do not back down. Houthis are not tied to a specific political party and are difficult to subjugate because they follow a vast array of political beliefs. Bombing Yemen to target Houthis indiscriminately is not going to amount to anything in value for the west. Just another war that leads to the death of innocents and more anti-western sentiments. This strike is a tactical deterrent. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I recall reading the houthis haven’t targeted any Russian or Chinese vessels, despite them passing through. Thank you. People like you give me a little bit of hope. I've been seeing a lot of people online support this awful group just because they're anti-israel We can't ignore the fact that, among other things, they started a proxy war on behalf of Iran which resulted in the death of 250K Yemeni children. The country that's hurt the most by this is actually Egypt. And their economy is already crumbling as is. People's obsession with Israel is blinding them to the point that they don't realize the houthis aren't just against Israel, but they're literally causing problems for all the arab countries, considering they rely on Suez Canal passage to import goods. When shipping companies suspended trade across Suez Canal, both Arabs and Israelis suffer from the consequences. 40% of Suez Canal revenue is gone (for Egypt). How is this about Israel? Geopolitical power is rarely about geographical size. The UK retains its position as a superpower in part due to its legacy empire & the rest in part due to it retooling it's military as a training force for other nations rather than a conventional armed forces.
