It is a smart idea to distinguish general racism from systematic/institutional racism though...

Racism against white people of course exists. Our very brains are racist by default.

Meh I don’t see much wrong with it, I’d be fine with it if it was a party to celebrate queer people in politics and inviting all my queer employees

lol- this is the go to saying. No one wants to be oppressed. The goal is for no one to be oppressed or excluded. Equality is equality period. Not, equality but without white people. If white members of the council Were invited the whole time, Then what is the point of having a POC only(but your plus one can be white) event?  This is such an American-centric prejudice(white people deserve it) type thinking.

I mean yea totally nothing wrong with it if it was a professional event to celebrate queer/POC people (such events don't generally limit attendance tho, when HRW celebrate Queer Icons and such they don't limit attendance to gay people )

Only issue here is this was a Christmas party, not a professional event to celebrate/reward achievements, and they literally disinvited their white employees, in a second email, after they accidentally sent them the invite.

Another thing to consider is government vs private. This is a government-funded event and as such it should never discriminate. If we allow this, remember conservatives will use the precedent to allow discrimination against POC/Queer people.

Just bad optics and shouldn't be done by democrats at a time when we have a LOT of problems when it comes to 2024 election. 

Personally I didn't expect this thread to become this contentious. I mean we should all agree that there is nothing wrong with celebrating POC/Queer people, but limiting attendance and excluding a group of your employees from a Christmas party is just not it.

POC members wanting an event for themselves to celebrate their accomplishments in a white-dominated field isn’t inherently wrong. Also, they allow non-POC to come lol y’all are trying so hard to make it racist lol

The words are being twisted plain and simple. This is not a "no white ppl party"

Systemic racism does not exist against white ppl

 

However the definition of racism was not one exclusively refering to systemic issues only

 

Most definitions u find go something like:

 

"prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized."

 

Its fine to talk about systemic racism in its own context. It is the one that matters most for general society purposes anyways. But i dont see any evidence the recent claims the word only applies in that context are true. Ppl are trying to change the definition.

 

PS: and for the record OT to be clear, no this party is not racist or prejudiced. The wording is simply misleading

I changed the wording of the title to be more factual, considering that the boyfriend of the mayor who was white got to surpass the rule I guess.

I made sure the title is specific and factual so that it's now clear that the white employees/council members are the ones who were excluded from the Christmas party.

So now we can stop talking about whether the title is misleading or not, and y'all can continue to talk about how reverse-discrimination can help us fight racism 

As liberal I am, that's a concept I'll never accept. I'll never accept this idea that by discriminating against certain people you'll achieve equality.

I oppose affirmative-action for example. The solution is to put resources into making sure there's better education in more communities, rather than denying overly-qualified kids because of their race. Equality is Equality. And this is something that I think Europe is handling much better than North America.

To some degree i agree with u. I think America sometimes (at least some ppl) seem to feel to need to over compensate now to atone for past atrocities.

 

But not every situation that involves giving extra attention to non whites necessairily fits that description, it depends. I dont think a party to celebrate success of a group of ppl that has struggled to succeed in politics is in anyway discriminatory

 

Its like having a special celebration for disabled atheleets. Its not discriminatory against healthy ppl, u are just giving some extra deserved attention to celebrate success of ppl who have a harder time having that success. And i think thats totally fine

 

Think pride parade as well. Do u consider that discriminatory to straights?

 

If they had said no whites whatsoever can attend, even spouses of black politicians that would be a different story
