This is Madonna last studio album. To be honest when I heard this album for the first time, didn't like it so much. 

Some days ago, I started to give a chance to this album, and I started to like more songs. 

I think it's really a great album

Overall, I don't think the album quite captures what it seeks out to do, either sonically, lyrically, or thematically. It could have done with a bit more time in workshopping and a bit more time in refinery. One of Madonna's more 'experimental' albums but also overall one of her weakest

I really disliked it/misunderstood it as first. Now I can appreciate it (with the exception of a couple tracks) as one of Madonna’s more ambitious recent projects. However, her take on activism, which was quite subversive during American Life etc., has nog aged well and feels outdated, a bit naive and unaware of her own privilege. So while she says things that in their essence I agree with, het wording and delivery have a preachy quality to them that I find a bit off putting at times. The idea that she is not just a popstar but also a martyr or messiah of sorts is noble, but unfortunately feels pretty pompous as well.

Its my favorite Madonna album. Its the only one I listen to and the only one I like from start to finish, other than True Blue. I find it so misunderstood and her at her best.

I love it sooo much. I always appreciate M's ability to delve into different music styles - all of her more experimental albums are my favorites of hers.

In my opinion it's one of her most creative albums in the last 10 years or more, I feel that she was inspired for the first time in a long time. The album has a cohesive message and sound and a lot of serious, but unpretentious lyrics.

But, I think that songs like Bitch, I'm Loca degrade the overall quality of the album and have no place there.

Bonus: I Don't Search I Find is one of her best songs ever

I think it's one of those albums that you need to listen to a few times to get it. I fell in love with it much later after the release.

Madame X is a fabulous album, it has some fillers like Faz Gustozo (maybe one of her worst songs ever), but some other tracks really elevate the album. I Don’t Search I Find, Killers Who Are Partying, Extreme Occident, Crave, God Control, Dark Ballet and Looking For Mercy are in her best works. A really underrated album and overlooked by her fanbase and general public.

Ah, Madame X. In which Madonna engages with the musical melting pot of Portugal, for better and for worse. “Killers Who Are Partying” represents the album in microcosm; vibrant and exploratory in all its fado zing, but lyrically tone-deaf and lacking sophistication. Because as Madonna infuses her songwriting with elements of the new cultures in which she finds herself, she also amplifies her best and her worst traits.

And actually, this is really what Madame X is about. The album celebrates the porousness of identity, how we combine and reincorporate and fuse. How we can slide effortlessly into different groups at different times, something of which Madonna was acutely aware in the eclectic culture of Lisbon. And so we’re presented with guest vocalists aplenty, collaborators old (Mirwais) and new (Mike Dean), Madonna’s son co-writing a song featuring a chorus of batuque musicians, a cover of a Portuguese classic, and a song about the evaporating line between humans and gods.

“Extreme Occident” traces a lifelong journey whose end point is this revelation, that we are constituted by everything we’ve encountered and experienced. As Madonna admits, “I tried to discover / My own identity”, but what Madame X teaches us is that “life is a circle”, in which we’re all implicated. You can see this in the freshness of the visuals, too; I especially adore the treatment for “Medellín” and the tour costuming. On the other hand, the spy theme within the imagery is delightfully campy but still fits well with the theme of identity, the motif of flying under the radar.

It should be said, too, that the quality of the music is generally incredible. “Bitch I’m Loca” glistens with campy nerve; “Medellín” bobs along with stately majesty; and “Crazy” is bursting with sunlight. Even the more traditional Madonna fare—“Crave”, “I Rise”—holds up well, whilst “I Don’t Search I Find” cribs from M’s 90s house heyday to create a subtle and rewarding fusion of old and new (which is elevated again by its Honey Dijon remix suite). And I haven’t even mentioned “God Control” yet: her greatest song this century, and arguably one of her best ever. From the heart-stopping wedding of disco strings to gunshots, to the career-highlight short film, the “God Control” single package justifies Madonna as the greatest popstar who will ever walk the planet. Because, frankly, who else would dare?

Madame X defies every critic who ever wrote Madonna off as a one-hit wonder, a squeaky chipmunk, a vapid blonde, a fading star, an ageing relic. It’s at times homely, at times disturbing; frequently envelope-pushing, but with a touch of familiarity. The album is not without its missteps (“Dark Ballet” tries too hard; M’s Portuguese is atrocious), but Madame X is infinitely richer than much of Madonna's recent output, because of its commitment to vitality, to inspiration and to experimentation.

It's quite controversial coming from American Life as the other Mirwais produced album and I completely understand why a lot of people didn't like it and even fans thought the auto tune was too much. I just really love she got the creative freedom to make it in the first place because it seems like other than Medellín, it is not meant to be a commercial album. Let alone have music videos for songs like Dark Ballet and Batuka.

Some of my favorites are: I Rise, Crave, Extreme Occident, I Don't Search I Find, Future.

I know most fans go crazy about God Control but I rarely listen to it now. It's too long, repetitive, it's messy, there's a lot of stuff going on. Idk it's just not a song I go back to anymore. It's definitely my favorite from the Interscope albums she made, Rebel Heart has it's moments too but MDNA was mostly bad.
