Moldova accuses Transnistria of abusive works in the mutually agreed Security Zone

The illegal works carried out by the separatists from Tiraspol near the road connecting Varnița and Tighina were once again brought to the attention of the Unified Control Commission (CUC). 

The Chișinău delegation in CUC says that during today's meeting, the weekly report of the United Military Command was not signed, as it once again did not provide a true picture of the situation in the Security Zone.

Thus, the irregularities reported to the military observers by the head of the Varnița police sector were not included, who pointed out that, although the Tiraspol representatives previously declared that crossings through the alleged metal safety parapet would be provided, these crossings were not made. At the same time, the concrete blocks installed in 2020 under the pretext of fighting the pandemic were not removed either.

Also, the management of the Police Inspectorate from Tighina announced an increase in the number of complaints related to free movement restriction in the district with increased security regime. 

In this context, Chișinău made the appeal "to stop the unilateral actions that cause tensions in the Security Zone and to adopt a decision capable of ensuring compliance with the principles provided by the Agreement of July 21, 1992".

What kind of illegal works are these exactly? Some kind of obstacles on the streets? Are they constructing a "Wall of Berlin"? More importantly: how do they secure the border crossings towards Ukraine, I mean, if someone attacked TRA, it would be much more likely UKR than MOL, or? The fact that they used the pandemic as a pretext to install barriers and still keep them, shows us that they want to keep MOL at a distance away.

It seems like TRA is fearing that MOL could invade them, which is unrealistic yet not impossible though. Maybe TRA fears, after Armenia was abandoned, that it could be abandoned, too, by Russia? However, their main business is smuggling things into the EU via MOL, so there should also be an interested into having open, unsecure, weak borders?

However, MOL joining the EU could prove more difficult than to be expected because TRA could occupy simply just an additional 1% of MOL and MOL couldn't join the EU then b/c it would have "unclear borders".

I had to giggle XD well, I guess it is normal that on an American pop forum, the geopolitics of Eastern Europe are not the top priority for people in general. Especially, since the "special effect" of Transnistria is to be a secret, shadow-independent (and therefore unknown) Republic that "does not exist" (by the way, I am just about to reply to the other TRA topic in about 15-25 min)

I love this in part because it's comically detailed and specific for a pop forum.  But when so many Internet users suddenly became experts on Ukraine after the invasion, I believe it's good to have this information about Moldova out there also.

Basically after the 1991-1992 war, it was decided the border between Transnistria and Moldova's de facto territory shouldn't be a fully impenetrable & militarized barrier, but rather work based on checkpoints and be somehow fluid - in the sense that it should allow people to move across (as of now Moldovan citizens can more or less travel to Transnistria, but they have to bribe the Transnistrian guards - after all this is the best system for the illegal schemes you mentioned). However, in 2020 using the justification of the pandemic the authorities in Transnistria unilaterally established more checkpoints, efectivelly extending its territory into the Security Zone (note however that the Security Zone were parts of Transnistria proper* with joint presence from Moldova, Russia and Transnistria - Transnistria didn't occupy more lands, rather it reoccupied areas which were supposed to be administered jointly, reversing the ceasefire agreements).

*By Transnistria proper I mean Transnistria in the shape that it emerged in the 90s - meaning, without 2 slivers of land east of the Dniester river, but including Bender and nearby areas west of the Dniester river.

As far as I know, the border between Transnistria and Ukraine is completely sealed. Which makes sense as Ukraine made it clear they want Transnistria gone- they even proposed a joint Romanian-Ukrainian invasion last year, which Romania denied. This is why Transnistria should relax if they are scared, Moldova has no army and acts in coordination with Romania either way, and RO has no appetite for any military involvement. One might interpret the recent events in that Transnistrians border guards are establishing more barriers so they can have more opportunities to ask for bribes tbh. Or might be a directive from Russia to stir things up (Russia is very likely scared of the prospect that it may lose influence in Transnistria as a result of the war, which hopefully it will ).

This means that Russia has reduced its payments towards TRA, local peole have become poorer and they, the border guards, do it just for some extra income to compensate for lower payments from RU. Well, TRA cares about money first, not about culture, so it would make sense.

What will happen to the light orange marked areas (part of TRA Rep., outside of TRA aut. Reg.) on the map if MOL joins the EU? Afaik, they are under real TRA control but MOL claims as them as "not being part of TRA"... so MOL would need to recognize them as part of actual TRA, otherwise borders will remain unclear?

Russian money for separatist projects drying up, we love to see it

If the Republic of Moldova joins the EU and/or merges with Romania, the parts of Transnistria under the de facto control of Chișinău would immediately become part of the EU, while Bender and its surroundings controlled by Tiraspol will remain outside the EU. The current strategy, as described by Maia Sandu, is that Moldova will not renounce its claims on Transnistria, rather it will continue to agree to disagree until Transnistria sees EU money are good, and then it will eventually ask to join on its own. 

Which I think it's a great strategy considering that by the time this is feasible Russia will be too weak to try to stir things up, and it will be like a Cyprus situation, except Russia will be in a worse position than Turkey (as a sidenote Cyprus and Moldova are almost perfectly analogous: Romania = Greece, Cyprus = Moldova, Transnistria = Northern Cyprus & Russia = Turkey).
