Does Pop Girls And Tame Impala Not Mix?

Kevin Parker is undoubtedly a very talented musician and make some great and amazing music for his own projects.

But when her produces for pop girls, the results seems not doing so hot? Like we, hardcore pop listeners might enjoyed them but outisde our bubble, the opinions are mixed.
We saw 2 examples now from Gaga (Perfect  Illusion) & Dua (Houdini), both are first single for their album, and are received lukewarmly by the music listeners.., and the charts, despite the street creds that these 3 big names got. (And yes, Same Ol' Mistakes by Rihanna didn't count cos she was singing cover version of Tame Impala's song.)

Why is that? Does he need to work with more pop girls to know better how to produce dancey pop songs? Or his style just don't mix with pop girlies genre? Or is there another factors that causing this? :oprah:

The psychedelic rock sound may be polarizing for the locals, but it's just two examples so far. Houdini may still smash like Dua's previous sleeper hit singles.

Let's hope so. I am rootong for both, it is such a bop

I think they're both good but they're both very extreme. Perfect Illusion is super loud and adrenaline pumping for the whole 3 minutes. Houdini is just flat for me the whole way through, but it's enjoyable still

I like Kevin Parker, but he does have a very signature sound and aesthetic.

Even his work with Kali Uchis it felt more like Tame Impala ft. Kali

I'm not sure he should be given that much credit. His Illusion demo is extremely different from what Perfect Illusion ended up sounding like, and I believe Houdini is primarily representative of the work of producer Danny L'Harle.

Imo, neither of those songs sound like psych rock lmao

We don’t know what Perfect Illusion would have sounded like had Gaga sung it less raw and full of emotion - which fit the song, but didn’t really bring out the full potential of the song imo

Houdini is a fantastic song and will be a hit

Hard disagree. PI slams and Houdini is flaccid + forgettable

i think we agree on that actually lol Perfect Illusion slams to its detriment on pop radio while Houdini’s inoffensiveness lends itself to a long life on radio. doesn’t mean i think PI is a bad song

That's why I said psych rock "sound." Houdini has been described as neo-psychedelia. Obviously, PI and Houdini are both pop songs from pop stars.

Yeah, but I said that neither of them “sound” like psych-rock. Houdini is very very very tangentially psychedelic.
