Those are two different things. Besides, the country is too small to keep emigrants coming endlessly. It's one thing to actually debate immigration policy. Fact of the matter is that Wilders has spent 17 years spreading hatred and prejudice. Mostly - but not exclusively - towards Islam. For ages, he has been pressing to ban the koran, mosques and other things related to Islam. He wants Islam out of the country. He's also didn't support a recent agreement meant for the protection and advancement of certain LGBTQ+ rights, and has been very conservative on that part. Just to name one adjacent issue. His policy is rooted in racism and discrimination. Economics are only his secundary objective, while almost completely ignoring/denying other societal and cultural issues. That also seems to ring true for Trump - at least on surface level (which is where my understanding of American politics ends).

Don't you know Americans know more about the intricacies of your region/ country than you do? This is a regular motif.
Morphine Prince 109,683
The most depressing part of the far-right winning around the world isn’t that I disagree with them and “my side” lost. It’s more of the fact candidates like this are what these political parties have to offer people. It’s so ridiculous we can’t get rational, normal politicians. It’s such a clown show everywhere and appealing to people’s desperation and prejudices is such a cheap (but easy) way to gain support.

I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that the majority of people willingly and knowingly vote for this. In America I can sort of understand it. Because, in the end, there's only two choices to be made: democrat or republican. But in the Netherlands, people can vote for over a dozen parties. There are tons of right-wing alternatives that aren't (as) racist and that want to tighten immigration laws in a more mild manner. Yet people "went out of their way" to choose PVV, when the alternatives were right there on the ballot. The majority of voters trust his vision - young and old. It's insane, but we can't keep seeing this as a fluke. PVV has (sadly) been a part of our politics for 17 years, and people knew exactly who they are supporting. This was a rational choice by a majority of voters. I hate it here.
Guest
I am so glad Spain is one of the few places where left parties are still in charge (Despite we are seeing one of the worst far right protests in the streets ever...)
Guest
In Poland, over half of Poles chose a central-left party. Only 46% chose right wing. It's good that there is an advantage over right-wingers

This was a rational choice by a majority of voters. I hate it here. From a political science perspective, the victory of the PVV is quite easy to explain, though. Like I said earlier in this thread, the big topic of these elections was 'immigration'. The majority of voters seems to be in favor of less immigration. Voters associate the PVV the strongest with this topic, hence they benefited from it the most. Also, other right-wing parties like the VVD and CDA failed to deliver what the people want when they were in government. So, people now are more likely to vote strategically. Parties like JA21, FVD, and SGP are way to small to make a change. NSC is a new party but doesn't have issue-ownership over immigration. Hence.... the PVV got many votes. It got 3 million votes because left-wing people in their ivory towers keep ignoring the problems that real people face outside the big cities. Really people, how often has this had to happen before people start to realize this and REALLY listen to these people? Belgium is next, and if people are not careful Trump will return next year.
