The churches are absolutely fascinating monuments (they are carved of fine volcanic soil and are very sensitive to the environment - a reason why they need special protection). They were comissioned by the Aksumite king who wanted to create a Holy Land in the Horn of Africa (they even named a local river Jordan to mirror the geography of Palestine).
