The Romanian president Klaus Iohannis will have state meetings in 4 African countries this week, starting with today's visit in Kenya.

President Klaus Iohannis declared, on Tuesday, in Nairobi, that he shared with his Kenyan counterpart "Romania's vision regarding the revitalization of our relations with the states of the African continent, Kenya having an essential role in our country's strategic efforts". The head of state said that the African state "is one of Romania's traditional friends in East Africa". "We agreed to develop cooperation in areas of crucial role for both Romania and Kenya: environmental protection and combating climate change, civil protection, education, digitization, green energy", Iohannis also affirmed.

The visits are at first glance odd and unexpected (Romania is not a global player that is concerned about extending its influence across continents). However, they are meaningful when one considers that Africa is increasingly a place where French and American power is replaced with Chinese and Russian influence. Cooperation between the African states and Romania - which has no legacy of colonialism or imperialism - might be a way for the EU to mend its loss of friendly regimes in the region. Part of why Russia and China are so successful in the region is that they have no bad history with Africa, so the West benefits from Romania's ''clean record'' which might open up more possibilities for collaboration.
