Rep. Mike Johnson voted new American House speaker

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans unanimously elected Rep. Mike Johnson as House speaker on Wednesday, eagerly elevating a deeply conservative but lesser-known leader to the major seat of U.S. power and ending for now the weeks of political chaos in their majority.

"Johnson, 51, of Louisiana, swept through on the first ballot with support from all Republicans anxious to put the past weeks of tumult behind and get on with the business of governing. He was quickly sworn into office, second in line to the presidency.

“The people’s House is back in business,” Johnson declared after taking the gavel.

"A lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, Johnson emerged as the fourth Republican nominee in what had become an almost absurd cycle of political infighting since Kevin McCarthy’s ouster as GOP factions jockeyed for power. While not the party’s top choice for the gavel, the deeply religious and even-keeled Johnson has few foes and an important GOP backer: Donald Trump.

"The federal government risks a shutdown in a matter of weeks if Congress fails to pass funding legislation by a Nov. 17 deadline to keep services and offices running. More immediately, President Biden has asked Congress to provide $105 billion in aid — to help Israel and Ukraine amid their wars and to shore up the U.S. border with Mexico. Federal aviation and farming programs face expiration without action.

"Many hard-liners have been resisting a leader who voted for the budget deal that McCarthy struck with Biden earlier this year, which set federal spending levels that far-right Republicans don’t agree with and now want to undo. They are pursuing steeper cuts to federal programs and services with next month’s funding deadline."

Mike Johnson is a deeply Christian and horrifyingly conservative pick for this position. He supports a nationwide abortion ban, is against the nation-wide legality of same-sex marriage while likening it to b*stiality and p*d*philia, is against the use of medical marijuana, does not believe in climate change, supported Trump's immigration ban several years ago and further voted for funding to eliminate funding for immigration assistance, voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the state of Pennsylvania, opposes increasing the minimum wage for his constituents, promotes the integration of (his own) religion and education within his jurisdiction, and has numerous times indicated support of the neo-Nazi 'Great Replacement' narrative.

With this recent election, he is now 3rd in line to the most powerful political position in the world.

Great, we replaced McCarthy with an even trumpier speaker. I don't get the democrats strategy here in supporting Matt Gaetz motion.

He broke his promises to the Dems earlier this year on the budget and they still rescued him with a continuing resolution. Democrats offered to help the moderate reps on the speaker vote if they would work on bipartisan legislation and they were turned down. This is not on democrats, but the fact that the GOP can’t get their own party in line.

There are like 2 dozen republicans in blue districts, electing someone like Johnson is just poison for them.

As for Johnson, I’ll be surprised if he lasts until the end of this Congress.

Helping Kevin McCarthy keep the speakership would have done nothing except continue enabling the GOP’s terrible behavior.

And you think their voters will care? They're crazy. They're the same people who continue to support Trump despite all the things he's done after the elections. I was watching a CNN segment and they were asking some local voters, one of them said he's happy the government is dysfunctional so that they can't send his money to Ukraine

You do know Matt Gaetz could have just kept bringing up the motion to vacate, right? Kevin McCarthy himself gave him that power.  It’s not on Democrats to save the GOP from itself. The damage has already been done. Daddy Trump owns that party and far right politicians were not going accept any sort of bipartisanship in congress. 
 

And again, I stress my point that GOP voters are too far gone. The point isn’t to court those people. The point is to court independent voters and people who normally wouldn’t vote but understand the severity of the situation.
