I’m going to post a long thing on the term queerbaiting, because I think it gets misused a lot.
Queerbaiting is a term that was meant to describe when tv shows or movies “bait” LGBT+ audiences by suggesting there might be queer content (eg, teasing a potential bromance or same sex relationship between two characters to entice gay audi maxes that they may see a gay relationship) but then never delivering actual gay content. Just hinting and suggesting that the characters might be gay, but then not delivering. That’s what “gaybaiting” is. Intentionally teasing gay characters in a vague way to attract both gay and straight audiences but never delivering gay content so as to never alienate any straight people.

that is very different from what Charlie is accused of doing. He is openly delivering content that he knows appeals to gay men but he doesn’t pretend that he might be gay. Straight men and straight women and gay men and gay women are free to exploit their own sex appeal to whoever might find them attractive. “Sex sells” has been a marketing reality since the dawn of advertising. But there’s nothing wrong with it and it’s not “queerbaiting” just to release sexy pics of yourself. It would be queerbaiting if he suggested he had a boyfriend and posed in sexy poses with a man and pretended he was coming out and then ultimately never confirmed it or even said they were just friends in the end.  That would be queerbaiting. But Charlie just showing off his body is not queerbaiting. All celebrities who show off their bodies want people to desire them and therefore buy their products.

thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Sorry, but your definition of queerbaiting is fitting his behavior perfectly.

1) He's teasing gays intentionally, as he exactly knows his target audience.

2) It's indeed done vaguely as he's not gay, so ultimately he's not delivering "gay content". :artdoll2:

I don’t agree. The definition is NOT targeting gays who you know are attracted to you by showing your body. That’s just using sex appeal not gay baiting. It would be gay baiting if he was pretending or hinting that he might be gay himself.  But he’s just a straight guy that is okay with and enjoys gay attention while continuing to be obviously straight in his lyrical content (“girlfriend”, all his songs about women) and his videos, which are very clearly about him and women.  He is not trying to trick or tease us into thinking he is gay himself. But realizing that gay people are attracted to him and then leaning into it is not “gaybaiting”. That would mean all those straight ally sports teams who annually put out sexy calendars marketed to gays are also Gaybaiting but no one calls it that. It’s the same thing. And I don’t know what mean by the promise of gay content which he’s not fulfilling. He’s not a scripted tv show. And he’s not gay. The gay content is the pics he’s willing to share to appeal to gay audiences. He doesn’t have to actually do gay **** to disprove your accusations of queerbaiting.
