I’ve been told it’s much darker than his past few projects and much closer in tone to Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies. It’s also very polarizing; people either really liked it and were emotionally devastated, or really didn’t get it and felt it got super confusing towards the end. It definitely seems like it’s going to be one of those films that you have to watch multiple times to really absorb everything though, which I’m ready to do

It is his third threat I believe  But to be fair, he’s now 82. This film took 7-8 years for him to finish, and the fact that he dedicated this movie as a goodbye message to his grandson (while the theme of this particular film is basically about how to cope with the death of a loved one) I would imagine he really did go into this thinking it would be his final project. 
 

But maybe he’s got other stuff up his sleeve and we’ll see more stuff from him in the future.

The film made its international premiere at TIFF tonight (Guillermo Del Toro hosted the showing!!!) and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive  I don’t know how I’m going to cope with waiting until December

I just saw this tonight! It was the opening night film for TIFF (Toronto International Film Featival) which happened tonight and I got to go! It’s classic Miyazaki with a kid entering a strange world and a mix of menacing and adorable creatures.
 

VERY LIGHT SPOILER AHEAD SO DONT READ IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING: There are these very cute white blob characters that can puff themselves up and fly and they’re called the warawara, and they’re introduced in a scene where the hero and another character  are gutting a huge fish and the guts go everywhere (and the warawara need to eat the fish guts to fly). it’s like his juxtaposition between the cute and the grotesque and he’s always combining the two in interesting ways. I found the plot to be kind of Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz esque, but it ultimately didn’t make any sense to me. I’ll probably need to digest it a bit more, I literally just left the theatre about an hour ago.

Here’s a pic I took of Guillermo Del Toro who helped introduce the film because he’s a big fan of Studio Ghibli, and I think TIFF wanted someone famous to be there for opening night.

Looks like most of you don't know how the reviews of this film are. It's already been released in Japan and  audience reactions are very divisive. American critics can be very hyperbolic during film festivals.

mm I think I mentioned on the previous page that the film is pretty polarizing so I don't think anyone is really exuding ignorance because they're excited about the film.

But since we are talking about reviews, it's currently at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_boy_and_the_heron

I'm sure this will fluctuate once it is officially out in the west and more accessible to the GP, but it's still interesting to see how different the reactions are.
