Which do you think is the most experimental album in Gaga's discography and why? I saw this challenge on Reddit, and was surprised to read so many nominating ARTPOP, which, apart from a few fine exceptions, already seems dated. When what I feel is that Born this way is one of the boldest gestures in Gaga's musical career, and I don't think it's ever been equaled. The level of ambition, variety and vocal daring has not been matched until now. I recently listened to Prince's "Come" album and wondered how Gaga seems to have stopped taking risks? As much as I love Chromatica, I hope she doesn't play it safe again, but stretches the boundaries of the status quo…

To be honest, Gaga isn't really that experimental musically speaking. Maybe as a teen I thought she was but now that I have broadened my musical tastes, it has changed my perspective on her discography a lot. If we are talking about about performance, music videos, and aesthetics then sure, she is experimental, but music wise, not so much... I still love her music though.

That said, I think The Fame Monster is her most experimental album. Songs like Teeth and Dance in the Dark are quite unique for mainstream music and I think throwing in Speechless in there was an interesting move.

Born this way.

for it’s time, The Fame was a pretty fresh new pop dance sound, as well as Bad Romance.

ARTPOP was very OF its time and thus sounded like music from 2013 and not music that was ahead of it’s time.

and the same is true for every album she’s released since.

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

I think fans of pop stars love to throw around the word "experimental" for anything that doesn't fit the most basic pop formula.

I think BTW, a bit of TFM and a hint of Chromatica

Agree with all of these:stupidoreo: still, Gaga's pop music is something def special. There's just something that screams quality from all of her songs

Born This Way is easily her most experimental, it's like electronic rock that blends opera, techno, mariachi, & house.

she hasn't released anything remotely that sonically wild since then tbh. Aura & the Sine from Above outro is the wildest her music has sounded since BTW

Genre wise, I think Joanne followed by ASIB. All of her solo studio albums are either pop, or EDM. Not counting C2C and L4S as both albums are just classic covers.

Musically, it's BTW. TF & TFM talks about fame, pain, money, and its dark side. ARTPOP isn't cohesive enough on what its about, literally Art x Pop. Joanne talks about social issues, her aunt, and empowerment. Chromatica, obv dancing thru the/her pain. BTW is everything! social, mental, empowerment, freedom, etc

keep on looking for Psyduck

I'm glad that people realize BTW is Gaga's most experimental album. The sound is really something unique. I mean Bloody Mary for example, you don't hear anything close/similar.

The one with Americano, Scheiße, and Bloody Mary

This is the right answer :enigma:

BTW is so sonically unique, even within her own discography, but especially when compared to her peers

Echoing what most people have said. BTW is Gaga's experimental album if we're talking musically. She's definitely shown throughout her career a willingness to experiment with image, aesthetic & everything but musically I wouldn't say her albums except BTW are genre defying. That doesn't mean she hasn't excelled on albums, I just don't think most of her albums truly show experimentation specifically on the music even if the era itself has been.
