The piercings are a common practice in Hindu festivities, so maybe not as shocking to other people as you'd think. During a festival in London recently, I saw several men carry a cart via a rope tied to rings pierced through their backs.

Body suspension has been a thing in the body mod/tattoo/piercing community for years, maybe decades. At my city's tattoo convention they have an exposition with professionals doing this, also had sexy stripper type ladies doing this choreographed to music, and interested freakies could even sign up to try it themselves 

It looks really shocking but it's apparently not that dangerous or even that painful according to my friend who did it

No bc of how it’s pierced and the depth alongside the surface area you do.

a few people have had it rip if it’s just one hook but most people do multiple or big ones that cover a wider area so it’s safe.
